James B. Bexley, holder of the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking at Sam Houston State University, has been elected to the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas board of directors.
Bexley, who will serve a three-year term ending in 2008, is an associate professor of finance at Sam Houston State and has had a distinguished career in banking.
"It is a great honor to have one of our faculty members serve on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas," said R. Dean Lewis, dean of the College of Business Administration.
"Dr. Bexley has already met with (Federal Reserve chairman) Alan Greenspan and I am confident that his directorship will create many new opportunities not only for the College of Business Administration but also for the students, faculty and alumni of Sam Houston State University."
Lewis said that Bexley's new affiliation will give SHSU students and faculty insight into the real-world workings of the Federal Reserve system.
The system's responsibilities include ensuring that enough currency and coin are in circulation, operation of a check processing and automated clearing house system, transfer of funds between financial institutions through Fedwire, a highly sophisticated computerized system, special services to the U.S. Treasury, and international services for foreign central banks and organizations such as the International Monetary Fund.
Previously, Bexley was president and chief executive officer of Cardinal Bancorp and a subsidiary, First American National Bank of Pennsylvania. He also served on the board of the Society for Advancement of Management and on the Texas Governor's Select Committee on Private Sector Initiatives.
He has written four books on banking and is the author of more than 100 articles about finance, banking, service quality and corporate governance. He currently is editor of the Journal of Commercial Banking and Finance.
At SHSU he serves on the President's Executive Leadership Council and is chairman of the Athletic Advisory Council. He is also a member of the College of Business Administration Advisory Board.
Bexley received a bachelor of business administration degree in finance from the University of Texas at El Paso, a master of business administration degree from the University of Houston, and a doctorate of jurisprudence degree from Blackstone School of Law.
He was named to the Smith-Hutson Endowed Chair of Banking at Sam Houston State University in September 1997.
