Douglass Announces Retirement
Thelma J. Douglass, vice president for student services
at Sam Houston State University, has announced her retirement.
James F. Gaertner, Sam Houston State University president,
said that he has asked Douglass to defer her retirement and
to work as special assistant to the president on some significant
projects until her retirement date of Sept. 30, 2005.
Frank Parker, associate vice president of student services
and dean of students, will serve as interim vice president
for student services
.
"I would like to thank Dr. Douglass for her service to
the university and especially for her devotion to students,"
said Gaertner. "We wish her well."
Douglass came to Sam Houston State University in 1993 as associate
vice president for student services and dean of students.
She became vice president for student services in June 1996.
Douglass received her bachelor of arts, master of education,
and doctor of education degrees from the University of Houston.
She also did post baccalaureate work at Texas Southern University
and the International School of Theology at Fort Collins,
Colo.
The student services division at Sam Houston State University
includes the areas of Bearkat OneCard, Counseling Services,
Dean of Students' Office, Health Center, Lowman Student Center,
Recreational Sports & Activities, Student Activities,
and Students' Legal & Mediation Services.
