CJ Officials Sign Agreements With International Groups

David Payne, Public Security University Official, Richard Ward
Sam Houston State University Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs David Payne, an official from the Chinese People's Public Security University and SHSU Criminal Justice Center Dean and Director Richard Ward enjoy a light moment following the signing of a scholarly agreement between the two universities earlier this semester.

Officials with Sam Houston State University's Criminal Justice Center have signed four agreements this semester with universities and institutions in Korea and China to foster improvement and gain cooperation in the field of criminal justice internationally.

It is expected that "these agreements will provide our students with an opportunity to have a unique global experience while working toward their college degrees," said Richard Ward, dean of the College of Criminal Justice and director of the Criminal Justice Center.

In August the College signed a scholarly exchange and cooperation agreement with the Korean Institute of Criminology, setting goals to address scholarly, educational, and cultural issues with an international viewpoint.

"Our group’s goal is to develop a network of scholarly professionals and practitioners on a global perspective for the prevention and control of crime," said Taehoon Lee, president of the Korean Institute of Criminology.

"These goals must be met under the direction of democracy and freedom, similar to the ways that the University’s namesake Sam Houston and the defenders of the Alamo met their goals," he added.

In September the College of Criminal Justice at East China University of Politics and Law and the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston signed a memorandum of understanding that outlined the goals of a joint cooperation between the two universities. The two universities will research the feasibility of a faculty and student exchange program to take place over a period of approximately two to three months.

In September a scholarly agreement was signed between the Chinese People’s Public Security University and Sam Houston State University.

"Both universities seek an international perspective on academic affairs, especially the affairs relating to criminal justice," said Ward. The sharing of academic and scholarly material, including research papers and publications, was a tenet of the agreement to enhance the overall education provided by the universities.

Earlier this month, an exchange agreement between the Korea National Police University and the College of Criminal Justice at Sam Houston was signed that outlined strategies for the relationship between the two universities. The goals in the agreement include an exchange of scholars, students and researchers to help broaden the experiences of those involved. Officials at both universities also discussed activities for academic involvement and scholastic achievement with an emphasis on participating in joint seminars and conferences.

"The Criminal Justice Center looks forward to the implications and to meet the goals outlined in the agreements," said Ward.

"The world is becoming a cross-national arena and the influence and experiences of different countries allow students and scholars in the countries involved to become more urbane and make them more competitive in today’s workforce," he said.

"The experience of studying abroad and cooperating with other countries on similar goals is a unique opportunity and the Criminal Justice Center has supported this approach for many years. The Center looks forward to the future relationships that will be made with these institutions and others," he added.
