Chandler, Thorn Get New Duties
The Division of Enrollment Management announced Tuesday that
Joey Chandler, director of Undergraduate Admissions, will
become director of the new SHSU Visitor Center Sept. 1 and
Trevor Thorn will move into Chandler's position.
Chandler has been part of the admissions/recruitment program
at Sam Houston State University since 1984 and has served
as director of Undergraduate Admissions since 1992. Under
her directorship enrollment has increased by almost 2,000
students and applications for admission have doubled.
"Mrs. Chandler's promotion to director of the Visitor
Center is a good fit because she is a true supporter of SHSU,
previously serving as president of the SHSU Booster Club and
has continually maintained good relations with visitors to
campus, as well as alumni," said Heather Thielemann,
vice president for enrollment management.
"The Office of Alumni Relations will be housed in the
new Visitor Center and Mrs. Chandler's excellent reputation
and rapport with SHSU alumni and their new director will go
hand-in-hand with the expanded role of the Visitor Center,"
said Thielemann.
"She is a true believer in SHSU and that Bearkat spirit
shows in everything she does and we are fortunate to have
this loyal attitude exhibited at the first point of contact
for prospective students and their families."
Thielemann said that Thorn was a natural choice to replace
Chandler.
"Mr. Thorn has served as assistant director for the past
eight years and is well-deserving of this promotion,"
said Thielemann. "He has produced the Viewbook for a
number of years, the interactive CD ROM, and is currently
developing an interactive recruitment DVD. He has many exciting
ideas for Undergraduate Admissions and is ready to take admissions
at Sam Houston State University to the next level."
Both Chandler and Thorn have worked extensively at increasing
minority and first generation student enrollment. This is
being accomplished through a number of specialized programs,
Closing The Gaps initiatives, and targeted recruitment efforts,
resulting in significant increases in both populations.
Thielemann said Chandler and Thorn will continue to participate
in and maintain relations through both state and national
admissions/recruitment organizations.
"Enrollment Management is fortunate to have such a great
team with a long-standing history of working cooperatively
in recruiting and admissions," said Thielemann.
