SHSU Update For Week Of Dec. 4

SHC Pharmacy Back In Business

The Student Health Center pharmacy is open once again after the arrival of its new pharmacist, Denise Irby, RPh.

Irby has been practicing retail pharmacy in Louisiana since graduating for the University of Colorado 13 years ago.

"One of the many reasons that attracted me to this position was the unique practice setting at the SHC, which offers a team-approach to healthcare,” she said. “Having practitioners alongside a laboratory and pharmacy can lead to an enhanced continuum of care and a greater impact on student health."

Prior to Irby’s hiring, the SHC pharmacy was closed due to the retirement of Jessie Turner, RPh.

The SHC pharmacy opened to all enrolled students on Nov. 28.

Students can fill and transfer prescriptions written by any provider licensed in the state of Texas and are encouraged to compare prices at the SHC pharmacy, “as many of our prescriptions are priced well below retail value and even insurance co-pays,” said SHC programming coordinator Michelle Lovering.

Some of the prescriptions students can save on include Amoxicillin, 30 500-MG capsules for $5 (a $6.99 savings); Naproxen DR, 30 500-MG tablets for $5 (a $25.99 savings); Ortho-Tri-Cyclen Lo, 28 tabs for $6.64 (a $37.35 savings); and Ciprofloxacin, 20 500-MG tablets for $5 (a $46.99 savings).

Those prices are as of Nov. 28, and prices can change regularly, Lovering said.

Students may request the most current price prior to prescription fills or transfers.

For more information, contact Irby at 936.294.1803, call the SHC at 936.294.1805 or visit http://www.shsu.edu/healthcenter.

Parents’ Association To Provide ‘Apple Days’

An apple a day won’t make final exams go away, but they will provide students with a study snack on Dec. 5-6.

The SHSU Parents’ Association will hand the fruit out, along with cupcakes and Scantrons, as part of the group’s semiannual Apple Days.

Parents’ Association officers and volunteers will hand out those items in the Lowman Student Center, near the Alumni Fountain, beginning at 8:30 a.m. both days, while supplies last.

The end of the semester is a stressful time, and the association hosts the event to show its support to all students as final exams near and projects, papers and other work is due, according to Mary Doerfler, of Temple, SHSUPA president.

“It is a pleasure to see the surprised look on the students’ faces when they are offered apples, treats and Scantrons free,” she said.

The Parents’ Association is an organization of SHSU parents who actively support students through awarding scholarships and hosting special events through fundraising events, member dues and the sale of merchandise. The association co-sponsors Parent/Family Weekend each fall semester, greets parents during summer orientation and Saturdays@Sam and participates in homecoming.

In addition, each semester, the association hosts two Apple Days giving out more than 1,200 apples and treats and 5,000 Scantrons to students.

For more information about membership, volunteering with the association or scholarships, contact Mary Ellen Sims, assistant dean students and SHSUPA adviser, at 936.294.3026 or mesims@shsu.edu.

AAI To Help Students ‘Celebrate Safely’

The Alcohol Abuse Initiative will give tips on how to “Celebrate Safely” as students ring in the New Year with a performance and discussion on Tuesday (Dec. 6).

The event, which will be held from 6-7 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater, will include the department of theatre and dance’s Arts Outreach Theatre Troup performing “What a Night,” a story about “two people who were at the same party and in the same room, but had two very different nights,” according to Student Health Center programming coordinator Michelle Lovering.

“The dramatic play focuses on how assumptions, alcohol, and miscommunication can lead to unintended outcomes,” she said.

Afterward, a peer educator will lead an interactive discussion, asking questions, as well as providing tips on attending and hosting parties where alcohol is served in a responsible manner.

“There are many things that hosts can do to ensure the safety of their guests, such as providing an equal number of non-alcoholic options, arranging ride options or a place to stay for guests who do drink, and making sure that minors do not drink,” Lovering said.

“There are also several effective strategies to reduce the amount of alcohol that one drinks, such as alternating water or non-alcoholic beverages and choosing lower alcohol-content drinks, just to name a few,” she said.

With reunions and other festivities that often accompany the holiday season, Lovering said the AAI wants to make sure students are prepared for issues that may arise when alcohol is present.

“The Alcohol Abuse Initiative would like to encourage students to act responsibly, even when they are away from SHSU,” she said.
