Fall Semester Comes To A Close

As the fall semester winds down, students and faculty are preparing for final examinations and a holiday break.

Finals will be held from Monday (Dec. 12) through Thursday (Dec. 15), from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. A complete exam schedule can be found at /calendars/finalsfall05.html.

Residence halls will close at noon on Friday (Dec. 16), with commencement ceremonies being held at 10 a.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum for the Colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration and Criminal Justice and at 2 p.m. for the Colleges of Education and Humanities and Social Sciences.

Staff members will receive a week-long break as the university will close in recognition of Christmas and New Year’s Day from Dec. 26-30.

The spring semester will begin Jan. 8, when the residence halls will re-open for move-in from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Spring registration will begin again on Jan. 9, and classes will resume on Jan. 11.

Rec Sports To Provide Finals Relief

The Department of Recreational Sports will give students some study relief, as well as a quiet place to prepare from finals by opening the Health and Kinesiology Center on Monday (Dec. 12).

Finals Relief, to be held from 8-11:59 p.m., will include food, prizes and massages.

“This time of year, students are looking for stress relievers, and we want to offer them a positive way to relieve stress,” said Tina DeAses, assistant director for wellness programs.

Students who need a study break can play dominoes and cards, take aerobic classes, color pictures or watch movies, all of which Rec Sports will be hosting or providing.

In addition, students who need a quiet place to study can also seek refuge in the HKC.

“We have quiet study rooms and group study rooms for people who just need somewhere to study but also want to be close enough to some action to take a break when they need it,” DeAses said.

The event will be held in conjunction with the Alcohol Abuse Initiative.

Continuing Education To Offer Abundance Of Classes

The Office of Continuing Education will offer a wide variety of courses beginning in the spring.

The office currently offers many courses to increase career opportunities for Huntsville residents and surrounding areas, as well as courses that provide technical training in computers.

Courses cover all areas of technical expertise, from “Introduction to Computers,” teaching the basics of typing on the computer, up to 45 words per minute, to courses that enhance knowledge of Microsoft software, such as Access, Word and Excel.

Continuing Education will also offer courses in phlebotomy, EKG, Spanish, oil and water paint and nurses aid certification.

Carolyn Gaines, continuing education coordinator, said that a Spanish class was scheduled for noon beginning in January.

"This class will be taught at lunch and is targeted at faculty and staff at Sam, although it is not
limited to this audience," said Gaines. "We have had several requests for a noon class and have created this one to accommodate those interested in this schedule."

Other new courses that enhance creativity include cake decorating, piano and basic floral and landscape design.

Also, beginning March 21, 2006, the office will offer a course to assist people who want to sell items on Ebay, which will include step-by-step instructions on how to research and list items.

For more information on registering for these courses, visit the Continuing Education Office, at 1825 Sycamore Street, or visit their Web site at http://www.shsu.edu/~exl_www/.

Registration can be done by phone, using a Visa or MasterCard, at 936.294.3701.
