Rice Prof To Discuss
Nanoscale Electronics At Colloquium
Douglas Natelson, professor in the department of astronomy
and physics at Rice University will be the guest speaker
at the Physics Colloquium
on Tuesday
(Feb.
22).
Natelson will discuss “Quantum Effects in Nanoscale Electronics” from
4-5 p.m. in Farrington Building Room 207.
“
As electronic devices approach the nanometer scale, it becomes necessary to worry
about quantum corrections to their electronic properties,” Natelson said. “I
will give an overview of these effects and will discuss the unusual
and interesting physics that our group observes in single-molecule
transistors.
“
These three-terminal structures, where conduction occurs through individual organic
molecules roughly 2 nm in length, are excellent examples of systems where quantum
effects control the flow of electrical current,” he said.
Among Natelson's many honors is the prestigious Packard Fellowship
for 2003-2008.
The talk, open to the public, should be understandable for undergraduate
physics majors.

Exhibit Allows Visitors To ‘Float’ In
Gaddis Geeslin Gallery
An installation by AFWE, an artists’ collaborative from Texas A&M University’s
Visualization Laboratory, will be on display in the Gaddis
Geeslin Gallery from Feb. 21 through March 11.
“
Float,” a presence sensitive 3-D environment, was made
using four video projectors, computer, DVD player, 5.1 audio
system, and
a customized
presence
detection system.
“
From a stylized boat, water surfaces of translucent mesh stretch into the distance,
becoming screens for animated 2D textures,” an artists’ statement
about the exhibit said. “The environment evokes memories
of traveling on a river of light.”
The installation allows viewers to feel as though they have
taken “a place
on rough wooden seats of an ephemeral boat,” floating down a river, seeing
shapes in the distance and hearing sounds “they can almost, but not quite,
recognize,” the statement continues.
AFEW, which stands for “Air, Fire, Earth, Water,” is comprised of
Texas A&M professors Karen Hillier, Carol LaFayette and
Mary Saslow, and visualization laboratory director Bill Jenks.
There will be a gallery reception Thursday (Feb 24), from
5-7 p.m.
The Gaddis Geeslin Gallery is open Monday through Friday
from noon to 5 p.m.
For more information contact Debbie Davenport, slide librarian
in the SHSU art department, at 936.294.1317.
