SHSU Update For Week Of July 31

Teaching Conference To Be Held Aug. 22

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences will kick off the semester by giving professors an outlet for discussing issues they may face this year with the fall 2005 teaching conference on Aug. 22.

Unlike last year, when the event was limited to faculty in HSS, the conference is open to professors from all five colleges this year.

“ It was such a success (last year), and we felt like it’s such a good thing, we wanted to open it up to any of the faculty members from any of the colleges from across the university to come and take advantage of it,” said HSS interim dean Terry Thibodeaux.

The conference will begin at 12:15 p.m. in Academic Building 4’s Olson Auditorium with a greeting by Thibodeaux, followed by a keynote presentation by Joyce Winterton, from USA Today, who will speak about “Enhancing Critical Thinking Skills Through the USA Today Collegiate Readership Program.”

The event will also consist of three different one-hour sessions, during which attendees can select from nine different presentations on topics such as the IDEA faculty evaluation system; a USA Today Collegiate Readership program discussion; managing excellence in teaching and research; and alternative learning activities.

In addition, there will be a reception following the event at 5:15 p.m. in the Student Advising and Mentoring Center, where refreshments will be served and door prizes will be awarded.

Professors can register online at http://www.shsu.edu/~hss001/conference. There is no sign-up deadline, but seating is limited.

Williams Named ‘Distinguished’ By Alpha Chi

Patricia Williams, professor of education and long-time sponsor of SHSU’s Texas Omicron chapter of Alpha Chi National College Honor Society, was selected as one of 11 individuals to receive Alpha Chi’s Distinguished Service Award.

Williams was honored at the 2005 national convention in St. Louis, Mo., on April 9.

Most of the recipients are current or very recent faculty sponsors recommended by their respective regional councils, according to Alpha Chi executive director Dennis M. Organ, though the organization’s national council also recognizes those who have been retired a longer time from active participation and friends of the society.

Williams served on the group’s national council from 191-2003 and was president from 1999-2003.

Program To Help Students Interested In Health Care

Students interested in becoming registered nurses, physicians’ assistants and other medical professionals have a new full- or part-time career option as Sam Houston State University launches its new LegalNurse Consultant Training Course beginning in the fall semester.

The six-day live lecture program is conducted over the span of three weekends and teaches legal medical professionals to serve as expert advisors on medical issues to law firms, health care providers, insurance companies, governmental agencies and risk-management departments.

Also included is the role a LNC would play in litigation, such as an expert witness in medical malpractice, toxic torts, product liability, personal injury, emotional distress, wrongful death and other types of cases.

Any RN or other medical professional interested in forensic testimony and medical-legal issues will benefit from the course, according to Casey Hartman, spokesperson for LNC Consultant Training.

The Center for Legal Studies’ course curriculum, offered in cooperation with SHSU, complies with the educational guidelines established by the American Association of Legal Nurse Consultants. The CE activity, with 50.4 contact hours, was approved by the Colorado Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

The course will be available throughout the rest of the year, with classes beginning Sept. 10 and meeting from 9 a.m. to 5 pm. on Saturdays and Sundays. It is administered and taught by local legal professionals and includes 42 hours of intense instruction.

For more information or to register, call the Center for Legal Studies at 1.800.522.7737 or SHSU at 936.294.3701.
