'The Distance From
Here' in Showcase Theatre Monday and Tuesday
The Sam Houston State University Department of Theatre and
Dance will bring audiences a low-class, high-drama story when
it presents the Summer Repertory Theatre production of "The
Distance From Here" by Neil LaBute. Performances will
be at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday (June 27 and 28) in the Showcase
Theatre.
Published in 2003, the play (by the author of "The Shape
of Things" and "Fat Pig") takes a look at the
darker side of the youth of our generation, set in verge-of-poverty
suburbia.
Two angst-ridden young men, Darrell and Tim, spend their
time searching for ways to curb their boredom. When Darrell
discovers evidence that his girlfriend has been unfaithful
to him, and that his best friend Tim was involved, it proves
to be more than he can handle, sending him off on a violent
rampage in the play's climax.
Senior theatre major Christie DeBacker directs a cast that
includes senior theatre major TJ Chasteen as Darrell, junior
English major and theatre minor Scott McCarrey as Tim, and
junior theatre Amber Sortino as Jen/Girl.
The cast also features senior theatre major Ashley Flatt
as Cammie, senior theatre major Christopher Wingler as Rich,
sophomore theatre major Alissa Palmeri as Shari, and sophomore
theatre major Zak Shanks as Boy/Employee.
Tickets are $5 and can be bought at the door. Children under
the age of three are not allowed. The play contains adult
language and situations. For more information, call the box
office at 936.294.1339.

Bookstore Welcomes Creed
As New Manager
A manager with Barnes and Noble College Booksellers since
shortly after beginning working with the company as a student
at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga, John L. Creed,
III, was recently named bookstore manager at SHSU’s
university bookstore.
The Tomball native, who served in the Army for a year and
a half as a firefighter based out of San Angelo, began working
with the company in 1999 in Tennessee and was quickly promoted
to textbook manager before being approached by the company
to move to Brooklyn, N.Y.
“ While working at the bookstore there (in Tennessee),
I was offered positions to be promoted, which I took over
school,” he said.
He and his fiancé then moved to Los Angeles, Calif.,
and later to Dallas, where he worked with Virgin Entertainment
for about five years combined.
While in Dallas, he was approached once again to return to
the Barnes and Noble company, which he said was his “desire
as well” and began with SHSU on June 13.
Among his goals in the new position is to finish his degree
at SHSU, he said.
“ I’ll be basically fine tuning my management
skills, but I do have the desire to finish my degree once
I can work it out with my schedule,” he said.
Creed replaces Jesse Nelson, who accepted a Barnes & Noble
promotion and moved to another university bookstore at the
end of May 2005.

Volleyball Team Turns Trash
Into Cash
The SHSU women’s volleyball team recently picked up
a little extra cash by bagging a lot of trash.
The City of Huntsville Parks and Recreation Department, in
conjunction with the Beautification Advisory Board, awarded
the 2004-2005 team $300 for collecting 630 pounds of litter
along Bearkat Boulevard.
The contest, which was open to all student organizations,
was held from the first Friday in November until the first
Friday in May.
SHSU’s Golden Key International Honour Society picked
up second place with 355 pounds of litter, gathered between
Palm Street and Bearkat Boulevard along Sycamore Avenue.
The “Bag Some Litter” program is an effort for
student groups to make a positive impact on the Huntsville
and university community, according to Cindy Blaylock, solid
waste superintendent for the City of Huntsville.
“ If you live in a dirty house, you don’t feel
good,” she said.
The program is aimed at educating people about how to keep
the community clean, with special attention being drawn in
such areas as Lake Road, 11th Street, the avenues and Highway
75.
Since May 2002, city employees and community volunteers have
collected 60,160 pounds of litter from Huntsville’s
streets.

Rugby Player To Benefit From
Tuesday’s Blood Drive
A blood drive benefiting SHSU rugby player George "Jack
Black" Largent will be held on Tuesday (June 28), from
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area.
The drive is being held to ensure that “any medical
attention he needs wouldn’t be postponed,” according
to Tina DeAses, assistant director of wellness programs for
the Recreational Sports Department.
“ Anytime you donate blood, the one pint you donate
gets circulated and can end up helping three people,”
DeAses said. “He will receive all the blood credits
from this blood drive.
“ I can't exactly say what illness has fallen upon him,
but surgeries are cancelled at hospitals due to blood shortages
more often than people think,” she said.
Thirty donors are needed in order for the University of Texas
Medical Branch to hold the drive on campus, but DeAses said
their goal is to double that number.
Those who wish to donate in Largent’s name should bring
a photo identification card with them and are encouraged to
contact Kirby Dorman at microwavablecorndog@hotmail.com.

Recreational Sports at 936.294.3658.
