International Programs Offers Korean/Asian Studies
Sam Houston State University students interested in Korean/Asian
culture, with the thought of possibly working in that growing
economic
arena, have an attractive option for such study in a new program
offered by the university's Office of International Programs.
"If you can afford Sam Houston State University and have thought about study
abroad, but thought it was too expensive, the Soonchunhyang University cultural
internship
program might be perfect," said Jurg Gerber, director of the international programs
office.
Soonchunhyang U. is trying to increase the exposure of their students to other
cultures, said Gerber, Students
who are accepted can spend 1-3 semesters living in an international dormitory
along with Korean English-study students and receive credits for Korean/Asian
studies courses.
The American students will take such courses as Korean Language, Korean Cultural
Heritage, even Taekwondo, all taught in English. They will enroll at SHSU tuition
rates, have free lodging, receive a weekly allowance of approximately $150
for food and other expenses, and be reimbursed for their air fare.
Students selected from SHSU will serve an internship as Cultural
and Language Ambassadors, spending up to 15 hours of week working
with groups and in a language and cultural exchange center.
Gerber said that Soonchunhyang U. is similar in many ways
to Sam Houston State, being
located in Asan, about an hour south of a major city and with an enrollment
of about 12,000. The nearby city is Seoul, the South Korean
capital.
Gerber said that Soonchunhyang University, which is known for
its programs in medicine and architecture, will also be sending
students to study at SHSU.
