Update For Week Of March 20
International Programs Offers Study Abroad Scholarships
The Office of International Programs will help three students
spend a semester studying abroad by giving $2,000 scholarships
for either fall 2005 and spring 2006.
In order to be eligible, the students must study abroad
for at least one long semester, according to OIP coordinator
of operations Donna Rogers.
These scholarships are available to students for study
that is not SHSU-faculty led.
“ It’s for those who want to continue their degree plan,
but want to do it in a foreign country,” Rogers said. “They
have to find a program they want to attend, and then they
have to go to their adviser here at Sam and ensure that
the program is going to (allow the student to) obtain credits
that are transferable to their degree plan and transcript
here.
“ If they do that, and provide us with information
from the adviser that they are going to get transfer credit
for the
course, then they are eligible for the scholarship.”
This would allow students to spend a semester studying
at such places as Oxford University in London, which has
been
a place of interest, Rogers said.
“ We have a couple of young ladies in the dance department
who want to study at a dance school in France,” she
said.
To apply, a student must complete the application form,
which can be found at http://www.shsu.edu/~int_www/abroad/ or can
be picked up in Frels Hall Room 207; provide a statement
of purpose for the study abroad; provide two letters of
recommendation from professors; and provide evidence of
transferability
of academic credits.
The application deadline is April 30, and the recipients
will be awarded on May 15.
The office also offers smaller scholarships for students
to study abroad over the summer. SHSU is currently offering
study abroad in 12 different departments in countries all
over the world.

To Run Shuttle For Rest Of Semester
To alleviate a potential parking problem due to the reduction
of spaces in the Estill parking lot, the university will
begin running a shuttle for the duration
of the Spring semester on Monday (March 21).
The shuttle will run from the Bowers Stadium parking lot from 7:30 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, making eight stops around campus.
Anyone can ride the bus and get on or off at any of the stops, which are marked
by signs around the perimeter of campus.
The University Police Department has posted an online map of the bus route
at http://www.shsu.edu/~upd_www/.
Parking spaces in the Estill lot have been displaced due to the beginning of
construction of a SHSU Visitors’ Center at that location.
The loss of spaces in that parking lot have also led the university to re-designate
faculty and staff parking in the northwest corner of the student commuter lot
near the traffic light on Sam Houston Avenue.
In addition, parking garage fees have been lowered to $1 per hour, with a maximum
of $3 per day per parking period for unreserved spaces in the garage. Individuals
parking in the garage must use a Mastercard or Visa card to gain entry.
Automated equipment reads the credit card during the entrance and exit of the
lot, and the individual’s account is billed automatically based on the
time spent in the garage.

Conference To Educate Hispanic Families On College
The department of educational leadership and counseling
will host its inaugural “Yo
Puedo Volar (I Can Soar)” conference for Hispanic parents and daughters.
The conference, a service-learning project hosted by Women in Educational Leadership,
will be held on April 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Sam Houston State
University’s
Lowman Student Center.
The free event will give Hispanic women in grades 9-12 information on financial
aid, college admissions, student activities, academic majors and mentoring.
In addition, presenters will discuss their true stories of success.
Lunch will be provided at the event.
The registration deadline is April 15, and space is limited to the first 75
young women.

Registrar’s Office To Help Students ‘Imagine
Graduation’
The Registrar’s Office will make preparations for the May 2005 commencement
a “one-stop-shop” with the first “Imagine Graduation,” on
April 12.
The event will be held from11-2 in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. Students
will be able to enter the coliseum on the west side, through doors 24, 25
and 26.
“ Imagine Graduation” will provide essential information from different areas
of the university to allow students to take care of their last official SHSU
business and “ease their minds as they move closer to graduation,” said
Valerie Sparkman, registrar associate.
The event will also serve as an opportunity for the graduate program to provide
information to students who may want to earn a master’s degree or doctorate.
Giveaways and door prizes will also be provided.

Alumni Association To Host Sam’s Boat Sam Works
The SHSU Alumni Association will help build the Bearkat
network through a Sam Works in The Woodlands on April 7.
Hors d’oeuvres and a free beverage will be served at Sam’s
Boat, at 26710 I-45 North, for the event, which will be
held from 6-8 p.m.

Buyers Group Seeks Donations For Fair Project Sales
As the Walker County Fair rolls around this year, the SHSU
Buyers Group will begin accepting donations to make purchases
that will benefit various youth
project sales at the fair. This year’s fair will begin Friday (March
25), with the youth project sales on March 31.
The livestock sale will be held at 7 p.m. on March 31 in the main building.
A pre-sale dinner will be served at about 5:30 p.m.
“ By combining donations as small as $5 and as large as $250, they (last
year’s
buyers group) were able to purchase, in the name of Sam Houston, several projects,” said
Larry Brown, coordinator of the buyers group. “This money goes to the
youth, who usually put this money toward a college fund.
“ I was the benefactor of this type of sale during my youth, a long time
ago, and
the funds allowed me to go to college,” he said. “Believe me,
it does help. Many of these young people attend Sam Houston State University.”
The group will represent SHSU at all of the sales, as funds permit, and the
group attempts to purchase projects of children related to a faculty, staff
member,
retiree or alumni of the university.
All donations are tax-deductible and can be made to Larry Brown, SHSU Buyers
Group, P.O. Box 2215, Campus. Donations will also be accepted the night of
the livestock sale.

PC To Talk Body Image, Recognize ‘She-roes’
The Program Council will reflect on body images and celebrate
Women’s
History Month on Tuesday (March 22) and Thursday (March 24), respectively.
Peter Benedittis, a doctor, will discuss eating disorders at “Reflections
on Body Images,” a Hispanic heritage committee event, on Tuesday at
7 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.
“There are beauty ‘ideals’ within most cultures and the Hispanic
culture is no exception,” said Jeffery Oribhabor, vice president for public
relations. “Women in particular face body image concerns as they compare
themselves to what the ‘ideal’ Hispanic beauty should look like.
“We will try to enforce that body images are manipulated in real life and
women should appreciate themselves for who they are,” he said.
On Thursday, the PC will honor women who have helped break the many stereotypes
they faced with “She-roes,” an exhibit in the Lowman Student
Center Art Gallery.
