SHSU
Update For Week Of Oct. 9
Fall Enrollment Continues To Reach New Heights
For at least the fifth consecutive year, Sam Houston State
University’s fall enrollment has grown to a new record.
The 2005 fall semester count is 15,364, a 993 student increase
from last fall, during which time that number accounted for
one of the largest enrollment jumps in the university’s
history.
This number is unofficial until the official numbers are
tallied for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board,
which receives
its report sometime after Nov. 2, said Rita Caso, director
of Institutional Research.
Leading SHSU’s population are the freshmen, making
up slightly over 24 percent of the student body with 3,729
students;
followed by 3482 seniors; 3014 juniors; and 2977 sophomores.
Graduate students account for 1,630 of SHSU’s students,
with the remainder of the population classified as post baccalaureate
(280) and doctoral students (252).

Denim Day To Raise Funds For Breast Cancer
October marks National Breast Cancer Month, and the SHSU
Student Health Center is encouraging students, faculty and
staff to participate in Lee National Denim Day-the world’s
largest single day fundraiser for breast cancer on Friday
(Oct. 14).
“
Breast cancer does not discriminate; it strikes the very
young as well as the elderly,” said Crystal Birdsong,
SHC nurse practitioner. “It is important to start screening
early by doing self breast exams.”
As part of Lee National Denim Day, students, faculty and
staff are invited to wear denim or pink apparel to work or
class in exchange for a $5 donation to
the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
“Whether you choose to donate or not, Denim Day is about awareness of breast
cancer,” said Michelle Lovering, SHC health programming coordinator. “I
hope this day will encourage students, faculty and staff to seek out more information
that may help prevent or improve outcomes for this disease.”
Lee National Denim Day is celebrating its 10-year anniversary with a fundraising
goal of $10 million, a goal to which SHSU is working hard to contribute, Lovering
said.
Those who wish to participate may drop off donations at the SHC through Oct.
14, or visit the Denim Day table in the LSC Atrium between 10-2 p.m. on Friday.
Donation pick-ups can be arranged for departments if necessary.
Cash, checks and money orders will be accepted. Checks should be made to the
Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and donation receipts are available
upon request.

Counseling Center To Screen
For Depression
According to a 2004 survey by the American
College Health Association, nearly half of all college students
report feeling
so depressed
at some point that they have trouble functioning, and 15
percent meet the criteria for clinical depression.
Because of this, the SHSU Counseling Center will sponsor
a Depression Screening Day for students on Tuesday (Oct.
11), from 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
“
This program is designed to provide information about the signs, symptoms and
treatment of depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder
and postpartum depression,” said Counseling Center secretary Sherrill McDowell. “It
gives individuals the opportunity of find out if they may be suffering from
one of these disorders by taking a written screening test and discussing the
results
with a mental health professional.”
After students fill out the free and anonymous screening, which takes approximately
15 minutes, a counselor will do an evaluation of their answers.
“
If the counselor deems that they (the student) need to come back, they will make
that recommendation for the student,” McDowell said. “Then we will
set up an appointment for the student if they wish to come back.”
Major depression affects nearly 20 million adults in the US in any given year,
with an estimated one out of four young adults experiencing a depressive episode
by age 24 years.
Depression, which affects people in all ethnic, racial and socioeconomic groups,
runs in families, and females have depression twice as commonly as males.
No appointment is necessary for the screening, and students should allow about
45 minutes for the whole process.
The Counseling Center is located in Lee Drain Building’s north annex.

Donation To Give New Program Scholarships
A recent donation
by the Houston chapter American Society of Industrial Security
will benefit the students of an
upcoming Master of Science
program in the
College of Criminal Justice.
ASIS president Darin Dillon presented a check for $9,133 to CJ Dean
Richard Ward at the group’s monthly meeting in August, specifying that the funds go
toward scholarships for the newly approved master’s degree
in security studies, a program that will formally begin in 2006.
“
We are pleased that ASIS-Houston is supportive of our educational programs, and
we look forward to working more closely with the chapter as we implement this
important new degree in the field of security studies,” Ward
said.
The degree will offer two tracks, in the areas of private security
and national security. The broad educational objective of the program
is
to prepare managers
and future leaders who are better qualified to address the growing
demand for security specialists.
For more information on the program, call the College
of Criminal Justice at 936.294.1635.
