AAI To Educate On Emergency
Procedures
Rosanne Keathley, assistant professor of health education,
will teach students what to do in the event of alcohol emergencies
with "CPR—What to do before EMS Arrives,"
on Tuesday (Nov. 1).
The workshop, sponsored by SHSU’s Alcohol Abuse Initiative,
will be held from 6-7 p.m. in Health and Kinesiology Center
Room 243.
The purpose of the workshop is to demonstrate skills such
as unconscious choking, rescue breathing, assessing a victim
using a primary survey to determine unconsciousness, CPR,
care for a victim who is vomiting and positioning the victim
on their side in the "Recovery Position," as well
as activating EMS at Sam Houston and in public environments,
care for a conscious person who has consumed too much alcohol
in the early stages of intoxication and notifying parents/caregivers
when emergencies occur, Keathley said.
“(Students should) Gain an understanding of the serious
nature of alcohol overdose/poisoning,” she said, “(and)
be able to recognize an emergency situation and respond in
an immediate, appropriate and confident manner when time is
critical in saving a life.”
In addition, Keathley will inform students of some of the
myths and misconceptions about treating alcohol overdoses
and poisonings; remaining with victims until help arrives;
"I.C.E.," in case of emergency framework; as well
as critical time elements involved with BAC and alcohol related
statistics.
Keathley has been an American Red Cross and American Heart
Association CPR/FA instructor trainer for 23 years.

Drive To Provide Information
On Upcoming Election
The SHSU Democrats, the SHSU Republicans and political science
assistant professor Tamara Waggener will host a Texas constitutional
amendments information drive for the Nov. 8 elections Thursday
(Nov. 3) through Nov. 7.
The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the quad
area across from the Lowman Student Center.
Early voting, which began Oct. 24, will also run through Friday
(Nov. 4), with Tuesday (Nov. 1) being the last day to apply
for a ballot by mail.
While it is too late to register for the Nov. 8 election,
students who voted in the 2004 presidential election are still
eligible to vote, according to Waggener.
Those registered to vote in Walker County who have questions
about their voter registration status should call the Walker
County Clerk’s Office at 936.436.4959.
There are nine constitutional amendments to be voted on during
this year’s elections, including a proposition to ban
same-sex marriage, according to the Texas Secretary of State’s
Web site.
For more information on the proposed amendments or receiving
a ballot by mail, visit the Texas Secretary of State’s
Web site at www.sos.state.tx.us.

Grad Students Help Out, Present
At Conference
A Sam Houston State University graduate student, as well
as an alumnus, recently made waves at the InfraGard Fall Conference
in Houston.
Tim McGuffin, who currently works in SHSU’s Computer
Services department and is studying for his master’s
degree in digital forensics, gave one of the best attended
presentations on "Anti-Forensics Techniques" at
the conference, held Oct. 25-26, according to David S. Burris,
computer science professor.
“Multiple attendees remembered
Tim as a speaker at other security conferences in the recent
past and complemented the university on retaining employees
of his caliber,” Burris said. “In short, Tim is
representing the university at a professional publication
level above that expected of tenure-track faculty."
In addition, Burris said he was “amazed by the number
of people who associated the book ‘InfoSec Career Hacking’
by Aaron Bayles” with the university.
The book by Bayles, a December 2001 graduate, was published
in 2005. He has been asked to form a group of authors to write
a second book on information security.
“Aaron’s work has certainly reflected well on
the university,” Burris said.
Other graduate students served during the conference as volunteers
as well, doings such things as introducing nationally-known
speakers.
“Repeatedly, I was told by attendees, SHSU’s contributions
meet or exceeded expectations they would have had for Rice,
Texas A&M or the University of Texas,” Burris said.
“It is clear Sam Houston State University has out-performed
all other academic institutions, federal/state/local government
agencies, federal/state/local law enforcement, and private
sector participants in the area of digital forensics participation.
“Our presentations have been amongst the most attended
and certainly the most technical,” he said. “I
was congratulated by members of the FBI as well as nationally
and internationally known speakers and attendees for the role
we are playing at the conference.”

Brass, Octubafest Concerts
To Play Out During Week
The School of Music will celebrate Halloween with a monster
of a recital by its faculty brass quintet on Monday (Oct.
31), followed by several other performances throughout the
week.
The “Monster Recital,” conducted by brass area
coordinator Randy Adams, will be held at 6 p.m. in the Recital
Hall.
“The program will take on a decidedly Halloween tone,
and is sure to be a lot of fun,” Adams said.
Halloween favorite “Fugue in D Minor,” “Four
Monteverdi Madrigals,” the theme from Alfred Hitchcock,
and
“Little Orley and the Haunted House,” narrated
by Randy "Uncle Lumpy" Adams, will be some of the
many songs performed by the ensemble, according to Adams,
brass area coordinator.
Faculty members performing in the concert will include Adams
and Steve Warkentin, trumpet; Peggy DeMers, horn; Henry Howey,
trombone; Bob Daniel, tuba; and a special guest appearance
by music chair Rod Cannon, percussion.
On Thursday (Nov. 3), more brass instruments will tune up
with the annual Octubafest celebration, beginning at 7:30
p.m. in the Recital Hall.
This year’s Octubafest will be held on three separate
days, beginning on Nov. 3 with a faculty performance, featuring
Henry Howey on the euphonium and Robert Daniel on the tuba
and assisted by Jay Whatley, piano; Kathy Daniel, flute; and
Randal Adams, trumpet.
“A wide variety of music will be performed to include
original compositions for the tuba and the euphonium, as well
as arrangements,” said adjunct professor of tuba Robert
Daniel. “A highlight will be a performance for tuba
and euphonium titled “Dutch Suite” by the infamous
P.D.Q. Bach.”
The second Octubafest performance will be held on Nov. 13
and will feature students performing solos from the euphonium
and tuba studios of Howey and Daniel, accompanied by piano
professor Yung-Eun Choe.
The third and final Octubafest concert, on Nov. 14, will feature
chamber ensembles from the euphonium and tuba studios highlighted
by a performance by the SHSU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble.
“SHSU tuba and euphonium alumni will join the large
ensemble at the conclusion of the program to perform Octubafest
favorites,” Daniel said.
Both the second at third recitals will also be held at 7:30
p.m. in the Recital Hall.
For more information on any of these events, call the School
of Music at 936.294.1360.
