Military Science Honors Its Cadets
The military science department recognized and awarded
its students for their outstanding achievements throughout
the year at the Bearkat Battalion Awards Ceremony on Wednesday
(April 13) afternoon.
More than 14 scholarships and bonds were given to the cadets for their patriotism,
leadership, performance, and other characteristics instilled through the ROTC
program.
Awards are given internally, through the national Cadet Command, as well as externally
through sponsored scholarships and prizes.
Cadets Michael Castillo and Ralph Salazar were awarded the Col. John W. Thomason,
Jr., and Lt. Col. Veronica R. Hernandez saber awards for serving as cadet battalion
commanders for the spring and fall semesters, respectively.
Among the many awards given, scholarships or savings bonds were allotted to the
following cadets: David Dekerlegand, $500 scholarship; Jacob Lopez and Juan Hernandez,
$100 and a Schuder knife, each; Jamesia Redwine, $500 bond; Johnathan Revere,
$200 bond and a trophy; Jacob Lopez, Ryan Jones and Genaro Prieto, $250 scholarship
each; Andrew Anderson and Ralph Salazar, $200 bond each; Kyra Willyerd, $50 and
a one-year membership to the Reserve Officers Association; and Joseph Lock, $100
bond.
Internally, 13 were recognized for their scholastic achievement, earning a 3.5
grade point average or above, and seven were recognized for their participation
in color guards throughout the year.
For their physical test, administered several times throughout the year, four
fell into the bronze category, earning 270-279 points on a 300 point scale; five
earned a “silver” ranking, with 280-289 points; eight earned a “gold” ranking,
with 290-299 points; and eight earned a “platinum,” or perfect, score.
Sophomore Austin Huckabee was awarded for the “most improved score,” raising
his physical test score 78 points from the beginning of the semester.
