RTV Faculty Conduct Workshop for Houston Area Students
Students in the Cypress-Fairbanks School District in Houston
attended a Radio Television Enrichment Workshop on Saturday,
January 15th, organized by Tony DeMars, associate professor
of mass communication at SHSU.
Radio Television alumna and Cy-Fair TV producer Denise Walker
coordinated the program through the school district. The workshop
was held at the Cy-Fair ISD Broadcast Center.
DeMars spent the past few years visiting all the high schools
in the Cy-Fair ISD, and organizing workshops such as this
one, discussing television news careers and helping faculty
and students enhance their curriculum.
The event is part of a relationship based on a grant DeMars
received from the Radio Television News Directors Association
. The overall goal of the association's High School Journalism
Partnership Grant is to improve high school electronic journalism
programs or help start new programs. Specifically, the orgnization
seeks to increase news career opportunities for young people,
advance diversity in media, and increase awareness of the
First Amendment among those studying broadcast journalism.
Mass communication instructor Jason Balas also participated,
talking to students about creative film-style writing and
production and demonstrating samples of some of his own recent
productions. Former SHSU
radio-television students participating as presenters in the
workshop included Bruce Biermann from Texas Parks & Wildlife
Productions, Kristen Ruth from Foley’s Corporate Productions
and Jennifer Price-Thorpe from Fox 26 News.
Topics covered at the workshop included broadcast journalism,
TV news shooting and editing, writing, creative shooting and
editing, and television and film storytelling.
DeMars plans to continue working with Cy-Fair ISD for more
workshops and other activities, but also is working to develop
a similar relationship with other high schools in the region.
