Theatre, Dance To Host Annual Scholarship Gala

The department of theatre and dance will once again raise funds for student scholarships with its annual gala on Saturday (Sept. 10).

The event, which includes students serving in every capacity--from performers to servers, will be held from 5:30-10 p.m. in the University Theatre Center.

This year’s performances will be variety-show like, according to dance program coordinator Jennifer Pontius, and will include excerpts from “Godspel,” “Ballet Repertoire” and some comedy skits.

The show will last approximately 30 minutes and will be repeated twice in the evening, she said.

Tickets for the event are $50 per person, $40 of which is tax deductible. Turnout is generally “excellent,” Pontius said.

The night will also include hors d'oeuvres and silent and live auctions, with prizes such as use of a condo for a week anywhere in the world, golf packages, tickets to the Houston Ballet and a Victorian bed and breakfast weekend up for grabs.

Program To Help Freshman Survive College, Beyond

Freshmen can learn valuable success tools to help prepare them for college and beyond with "The Ultimate Road Trip: Campus2Career" on Wednesday (Sept. 7), at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.

The presentation, which will last about an hour, will include such topics as “successfully managing the transition to college,” “tips for getting great grades and managing time,” “the power of work experience and internships” and “meaningful extracurricular involvement.”

" (The program) is a dynamic and energetic presentation about the choices students make during college,” said Keri Rogers, director of the First Year Experience. “It also helps give students the confidence to survive their first college year and use their entire college experience to drive themselves toward future career success, during and after their time at Sam Houston State University.”

In addition, the program is supplemented by a workbook that each student can use to follow along with the speaker, helping them retain key tips and tools, she said.

“ Sam Houston State University cares about the success of its students,” Rogers said. “We are committed to providing an environment that supports the academic and personal success of the student, while ensuring a smooth transition into this new stage of their lives.”

The program is sponsored by the First Year Experience, the Dean of Students’ Office, and Career Services.

Grad Student Awarded $7,500 Scholarship For MBA

SHSU graduate student Kevin Wayne Parish has been selected as one of 15 Texas university students to receive a $7,500 scholarship toward his Master of Business Administration degree from The Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation.

Parish will be recognized during an association luncheon on Nov. 15 at the Wyndham Anatole Hotel in Dallas.

Now celebrating its 23rd anniversary, the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation honors members of the state’s business community whose visions and careers have helped to place Texas at the forefront of the 21st century economy and seeks out the future entrepreneurs and leaders that will allow Texas to maintain this presence in the future.

“ A common theme clearly resonates from our 2005 scholarship recipients,” said Talmage Boston, chairman of the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation. “Honor, integrity and hard work, combined with a passion for challenge, has allowed each recipient to achieve this honor.

“ The Foundation is proud to reward them and to assist them as they strive to make a difference in the Texas of tomorrow,” Boston said.

Students seeking a scholarship from The Texas Business Hall of Fame must be nominated by the dean of the school at which they are seeking their MBA, maintain a 3.5 grade point average or better, have completed at least one semester in an MBA program and demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit.

To date, The Texas Business Hall of Fame has awarded more than $2 million in scholarships to students pursuing a business education at Texas’ leading institutions of higher learning.

The Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation is a non-profit organization of 75 directors who are business leaders from cities throughout the state.

The organization’s mission is to recognize the accomplishments and contributions of Texas business leaders, to perpetuate and inspire the values of entrepreneurial spirit, personal integrity and community leadership in all generations of Texans.
