Students to Decide Next Homecoming Theme

The SHSU Homecoming steering committee will be trying something new for Homecoming in fall 2005- letting students decide the theme. Students, faculty, and staff can share their ideas for a Homecoming theme by placing them in one of the boxes located on campus or submitting them online. After the steering committee narrows down the possibilities, students will vote on the theme, and a $200 cash prize will be given to the winner.

"With this contest, we'll have the boxes in four locations and an online site. The deadline will be March 31. At that point, the subcommittee will select three to four finalists. Then we're going to put it to a student vote and it will be at the same time as Student Government Association elections," said Cindy Truax, assistant director for development.

Three boxes will be in the LSC, at the student activities office, the information desk, and the food court, near the convenience store. The fourth box will be in the South Paw food court.

The Homecoming steering committee wanted students to be involved in the process this year "because we feel their input is important and we want their involvement. ... Their input will give a say in homecoming," said Truax.

It could turn out to be a tradition. "We're hoping for a good number of entries and that the interest is there. [If so,] that would be something we want to continue."

Truax said because last year was the university's 125th anniversary, the theme "Birthday Bash" seemed obvious. Before that, "Paint the Town Orange" was an effort to involve the town in the celebration.
Involving others is a big aspect of Homecoming. Truax said many alumni return to SHSU for the Homecoming game and other activities.

This is one reason for holding the contest so early: Heritage, a magazine published by University Advancement for alumni, will let former students know about plans for the Fall Homecoming celebration. "It goes out to all alumni so they can put it on their calendar," said Truax.

Truax doesn't know what to expect with the new competition. "Anything is possible," she said.
The deadline for submissions is March 31. Voting for SGA and the Homecoming theme will be April 18 -- 19, and the competition winner will be announced April 25.
