The “campaign” is over, twice the success of last year’s, but the Sam Houston State University Faculty/Staff Annual Fund drive continues.

Participation rates in the Annual Fund Campaign, which began Oct. 11 and ended Nov. 18, set a new record at 52.5 percent—11.1 percent higher than last year. While the volunteer-driven effort is over, employees can continue to give throughout the year.

Jim Bexley, overall chair for the campaign, announced at a campaign committee appreciation luncheon this week that 756 SHSU, employees have already committed $139,343. He challenged employees to reach at least 60 percent before the end of the fiscal year.

During last year’s fall campaign 41.4 percent of employees participated, giving $76,000. Before the year ended the participation rate reached 49 percent and the total amount contributed totaled $164,000.

James F. Gaertner, Sam Houston State University president, congratulated the volunteers on their results. High employee participation in the annual fund is an important signal to external donors when the university asks for funding, he said.

“We all know what a wonderful, wonderful place this is,” he said. “Our contributions tell others who we are asking to help that we are committed to making it even better.”

Cindy Truax, assistant director of development and the campaign coordinator, said that the employee participation rate in the annual fund drive was 23.7 percent the first year it was held, increased to 37.6 percent the next year, and reached 49 percent last year.

Truax presented plaques to the committee’s three chairs, Bexley (general chair), Rosanne Keathley (faculty chair), and Joey Chandler (staff chair), and awards to other university entities that led in several categories.
