director Pam Laughlin, right, and her staff, as well as
vice president for Enrollment Management Heather Thielemann,

When now-SHSU alumna Carrie Smith walked into a math classroom
in the Lee Drain Building one day, she found something that
changed her life.
On the chalkboard was an announcement for Cutco Vector, the
producer of the knives that “can cut through anything,” stating
the company was looking for student employees. The animal
science major decided to apply and was called for an interview.
“
It changed my whole life, because I never, ever in my life
was I interested in sales,” Smith said. “I was
really shy and really quiet. But I was like, ‘alright,
I’ll try it; if you think I can do it, I’ll try
it.’”
As a student employee, Smith started by showing the products
to her family in Winnie, Texas, getting recommendations for
other appointments from there.
In the spring 2004 semester, just before she graduated, she
was awarded the highest productivity award for sales in the
region. As a student employee, she qualified for a $700 scholarship
and earned SHSU’s career services department a check
for $1,500.
“
With Cutco, whenever anybody has the highest sales as a student,
they reward the school through the career services center,” said
Career Services employment specialist Vinessa Mundorff said
on Wednesday morning, when Smith presented the department
their check.
Prizes given to universities are awarded in three categories:
for the school with the most students working for Cutco,
the school with the most sales, and the highest productivity
in sales, or quantity per order.
In that student job, Smith also found a career.
After graduating from SHSU in May 2004, she was promoted
to assistant manager in the district office, located in Houston.
After reaching her goal and selling $100,000 for the year,
she was promoted to sales manager this past spring. As sales
manager, she now recruits students of all ages into the Cutco
family. She will also soon open her own office in the Houston
area.
