homecoming logo 05

Sammy the Bearkat will be ‘lovin’ Sam Houston State University tender’ as the university’s very own Elvis Presley impersonator as part of the 2005 homecoming festivities, Oct. 3-8.

“Viva Huntsvegas…Bearkat Style,” this year’s homecoming theme, was selected as part of a contest earlier in the year. As the winning entry, it received about half the votes cast from the student poll.

Homecoming week will kick off on Monday with a rally at noon in the Lowman Student Center Mall Area and a Viva Huntsvegas! Casino Night at 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.

On Tuesday, Bearkats can Rock and Bowl from 9:30 p.m. to midnight at Huntsville Lanes, and Wednesday and Thursday will also give gamblers an opportunity to play like they are in Las Vegas with the Kat Klub’s Texas Hold’em tournaments, at 5 p.m. on both nights in the Kat Klub.

Wednesday night’s activities will include the homecoming parade, beginning at 7 p.m., followed by the annual SamJam carnival, featuring rides and midway-type games, at 8 p.m. in the Bowers Stadium parking lot. Parade participants should meet at 6 p.m. on 19th street in front of the Homestead restaurant to line up for this year’s route, which will run north on Sam Houston Avenue, turn right on 12th Street and go back down University Avenue.

On Friday, the class of 1955 will be honored at 11 a.m. in the LSC Ballroom as part of the Golden Circle Reunion, sponsored by the President’s Office; the Department of Recreational Sports will have an open house at 5 p.m. in the Health and Kinesiology Center; and the Distinguished Alumni Gala reception and dinner will be held at 6 p.m. in the LSC Ballroom.

The culmination of the homecoming activities will occur on a very busy Saturday, beginning with a morning filled with college and departmental open houses from 10-11 a.m. All open houses will be held in their respective buildings, with the Humanities and Social Sciences open house to be conducted in the Mattie B. Medford Living Center, located in Academic Building II.

Receptions will also be held for the College of Business Administration, which will host an alumni appreciation breakfast from 9-10 a.m. in the Smith-Hutson Building; Student Leaders Alumni reception, sponsored by the Dean of Students’ Office, which will be held from 9:30-11 a.m. in the Peabody Library; Agricultural Sciences, which will be held from 10-11 a.m. in the Thomason Building; and the Honors Program Alumni reception, also from 10-11 a.m. in the Student Advising and Mentoring Center.

At 10:30 a.m., the bell tower will be formally dedicated just outside the Bobby K. Marks Administration Building, and SHSU President James F. Gaertner will meet and greet campus visitors with Pre-Game with the President from 11 a.m. to noon in Austin Hall.

At 11:30 a.m., the Lettermen Association will recognize its newest inductees with the annual Hall of Honor luncheon, in the LSC Ballroom.

As game time approaches, the university will continue to celebrate homecoming with a tailgate party, complete with Sammy the Bearkat donning an Elvis costume. in Bearkat Alley, on the north side of the Bowers Stadium parking lot, from noon until kickoff time for the SHSU and Northwestern game, which will begin at 2 p.m.

This year, along with food and fun, the Office of Student Activities and the Office of Alumni Relations will give new incentives for continuing the “Viva Huntsvegas” theme through a tailgate competition. Cash prizes of $150 will be given for three categories: “Best Food,” which would include an appetizer, main dish and dessert; “Most SHSU Spirit;” and “Best Use of Homecoming Theme.”

Those who wish to participate in the contest should sign up through one of the two sponsoring offices, by calling 936.294.1841 or visiting http://alumni.shsu.edu. There is a $5 entry fee for each category, and the contest is open to everyone. Entry forms must be turned in by Oct. 3.

That evening, the new Bearkat Baseball and Softball Facility will host an open house and an alumni baseball and alumni softball game, beginning at 5 p.m. at the facility.

Saturday’s events will conclude with the Lady Bearkats’ volleyball match against Lamar University at 7 p.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum
