Families 'Race' For Weekend At SHSU

SHSU will take students and their families on “The Amazing Race” this Friday, Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 23-25) as part of this year’s Parent/Family Weekend.

Weekend festivities will kick off on Friday with reduced fees all weekend at Raven Nest Golf Course, along Interstate 45 South, where families can play for $20, which includes green fees and a cart.

Also on Friday, there will be tours of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Katy and E. Don Walker Education Center; a Bearkat soccer game against Prairie View A&M at 6 p.m. at Pritchett Field; and a bit of laughter with Program Council’s Comic View featuring Tim Young, from this season’s “Last Comic Standing,” at 7 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.

Saturday morning will begin with check-in from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the LSC Main Lobby, when early risers can have coffee with the administrators in the LSC Atrium, from 9-10 a.m.

Among the many other activities slated for Saturday will be “The Amazing SHSU Race,” from 2-4 p.m.
“We’re going to have a family-oriented scavenger hunt around campus,” said assistant dean of students Mary Ellen Sims. “We will have some stations set up, where they will stop, and each place will give them a little prize. Everyone who completes that will be eligible for the drawing for the grand prize.”

Grand prizes include a television, portable DVD player and an ipod.

“ In a lot of ways, it’s the traditional program that we have every year. The whole idea is to bring the family to the students,” Sims said. “We have the highlight being the football game, and we encourage parents and students to participate in as many activities as they want to.”

The football game versus Missouri State, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Bowers Stadium, will follow a classic car cruise in, from 4-6 p.m., and a pre-game party, from 4:30-6:30 p.m., both of which will be held in the stadium’s north parking lot.

Sunday morning will conclude the weekend with an interdenominational Christian worship service led by interim dean of students John Yarabeck and including Chi Alpha’s praise band. The service will be held from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Farrington Pit.

The registration fee for the weekend is $10 per family, which includes a welcome gift at check-in and snacks at the cookout during the pre-game party. Tickets for the football game will be available on game day or can be purchased through the athletics department at 936.294.1726.
