Writers' Conference Schedule - Oct 11, 2006

Afternoon Sessions

Noon-12:45 p.m.: Cochran-Guinn, The Interview: Drawing out the real person and other tips to getting the information you need for your story.   Rather Bldg, Room 205.

1-1:45 p.m:  Poirot-Stowers , The Interview: Tips about getting reluctant sources to open up; also, how to prepare for the challenging, specialized interviews (for instance, medical, sports, true-crime stories).   Rather, Room 105.
   
1-1:45 p.m.: Alter, Douglas and Donovan. So you want to write the Great American Novel. Do you know what impresses editors and agents?  Find out.   Our speakers discuss what makes good fiction. And how to sell it . Rather, Room 125.

2-2:45 p.m.,  Cochran and Rogers.   The Interview: How seemingly "little" facts can make a big difference.   How good interviewing leads to rich and compelling stories. Rather, Room 205.  

2-2:45 p.m.:  Guinn-Stowers.   The power of persuasion: How good writing can boost your career -- regardless of the career you choose. Plus: authors' everyday tips on how you can make yourself a better writer. Rather, Room 125

3 p.m.-3:45: Douglas-Alter.    Genre Fiction - What makes it work - and what pitfalls to avoid. Evans Complex, Room 262.

3-3:45 p.m.  Poirot-Rogers-Cochran .    Deciding what makes a good feature story or column - then deciding how best to research and write it.   And: How to write that winning lead. Rather, Room 125 .    

4-4:45 p.m.: Donovan, Guinn. The Hows and Whys of finding a literary agent. Rather, Room 105.            

When speakers are not in sessions, they will be hanging out in Room 209 of the Rather Building.   Students are invited to visit with them individually or in small groups for counsel or critiques of their work. No appointment necessary.   

                                                            Evening Program

7:30 p.m.:   The Creative Process, and Readings.   A program hosted by Jeff Guinn , the former book editor of the Star-Telegram, on the writing of the collaborative western novel Noah's Ride , published October 2006 by TCU Press. Six of the above-named authors contributed chapters to the novel .   Alter, Douglas and Guinn will give readings from Noah's Ride. Evans Complex, Room 105.   Open to the public.

                                                            About the authors

Judy Alter is director of TCU Press, author, and 2005 recipient of the Owen Wister Award for Lifetime Achievement from Western Writers of America, Inc.

Mike Cochran is a longtime, award-winning reporter for The Associated Press and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, whose books include Texas v. Davis. He is a three-time winner of the Texas Institute of Letters Stanley Walker Award for best literary journalism.

Carole Nelson Douglas, a former newspaper reporter and editor, is the author of fifty novels and has won or been short-listed for more than fifty writing awards. She writes the Midnight Louie feline PI contemporary mystery series set in Las Vegas and the Irene Adler Sherlockian historical suspense novels.

Jeff Guinn is the former book editor of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram and author of ten books, including Our Land Before We Die.   He is the nonfiction winner of the 2003 TCU Texas Book Award, and The Autobiography of Santa Claus, a national best-selling novel.

Carolyn Poirot is a much honored medical/health and science writer for the Fort Worth Star- Telegram who has also won awards for her news and features reporting.

Mary Rogers is an award-winning features writer and columnist for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Carlton Stowers has twice won the Edgar Award for true crime writing from the Mystery Writers of America. His newest title is When Dreams Die Hard: A Small Town and Its Six-Man Football Team.

Jim Donovan is a Dallas-based literary agent.   Writers he represents have had numerous books on national best-seller lists.   

The Writers' Conference is hosted

  by the English and Mass Communication departments.
