AAI To Host Art Contest For Alcohol Perspectives
Students will have the opportunity to exhibit their depictions
of the physical and psychological effects of alcohol use during
the Alcohol Abuse Initiative’s Student Display Contest.
“The focus of the contest is to allow students to visually
create their ideas on the effect that alcohol has made on
their lives, the lives of others and in society,” said
assistant professor of health education Rosanne Keathley.
The contest, entitled “Student Perspectives on Alcohol
Abuse," will kick off on Monday (Feb. 6) with a meeting
at 5 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Theater.
During the Monday night SWAAT event, student members of the
AAI Alisha Moore and Elke Eisenhaur will discuss the purpose
and details of the competition, and the two will guide participants
through an interpretive art activity entitled "Alcohol
and Trees."
"The contest will allow students to voice their personal
expression of alcohol through art in a creative media of their
choice," Eisenhauer said.
Students aren’t required to attend the kick off meeting
to participate but are encouraged to do so, according to Michelle
Lovering, health programming coordinator at the Student Health
Center.
Students may submit one entry in each of the four contest
categories: photography, painting, drawing, and mixed media
collage.
The submission deadline is Feb. 24, and the pieces will be
displayed in the LSC Gallery during the AAI's "Reducing
Irresponsible Drinking Week," held Feb. 27 through March
4.
Students will serve as judges for the contest, with ranking
sheets made available at the LSC Information Center, with
prizes including four $25 gift certificates from area bookstores
for the winners of the individual media categories and one
grand prize award of a $50 gift certificate.
Winning displays will be announced on March 7 in “The
Houstonian.”
All SHSU students are eligible to enter.
