SHSU
Update For Week Of April 16
Volunteers Sought For Upcoming
Folk Festival
|
Students dress in Civil War-era attire
as volunteers during a previous General Sam Houston Folk
Festival. Volunteers are currently being sought to help
with this year's festivities. |
The Sam Houston Memorial Museum and the SHSU history department
are seeking students and community members to participate
in the 19th
annual General Sam Houston Folk Festival in various
capacities April 21-23.
Volunteers are being sought for such duties as helping with
the children’s tent, ticket sales and taking, rotunda
and grounds security, courtesy van driving, working in the
hospitality tent and helping to sell CDs for performing artists.
Volunteer coordinator Caroline Castillo-Crimm is also seeking
people to dress in period costumes as historical “Ask
me who I am” figures.
During the festival’s “Children’s Day”
on Friday, students will be able to get the historical figure’s
“autograph” in a book they will be given for the
day by inquiring who the person is dressed as, Castillo-Crimm
said.
“We have costumes for anybody who is interested,”
she said. “If any mothers and daughters want to do costumed
characters, we have some mother-daughter outfits that are
just precious.
“It’s a really, really fun thing,” Castillo-Crimm
said. “It’s something that’s exciting and
entertaining and interesting.”
There will also be a Dutch oven cooking competition for six
teams of four in which each team will create a meal consisting
of a meat, a bread, a side dish and a desert using the cookware.
“Dutch ovens are big, round heavy cast-iron pots that
have lids. What you do is put coals underneath them and coals
on top of them so it makes an oven,” Castillo-Crimm
said. “The students who participate are the ones who
get to eat. They actually learn how to do Dutch oven cooking.”
Finally, participants are sought to help with the Civil War
reenactment with the 11th Texas Cavalry on all three days.
Those interested must attend a training seminar on Monday
(April 17) to learn how to shoot black powder rifles. Two
different sessions will be held, at 9 a.m. and noon, at the
museum.
Volunteers will work in three-hour shifts on Friday, Saturday
or Sunday. Shifts are from 9 a.m. to noon, noon to 3 p.m.
and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on all three days.
Those who want to participate can sign up in the history
department, in Academic Building IV Room 441,
by e-mailing crimm@shsu.edu
or by calling 936.294.1475.

SHSU, Brazosport
Sign Joint-Admission Agreement
|
SHSU provost and vice president for
Academic Affairs David Payne and Brazosport College president
Millicent Valek sign the agreement that will allow BC
students to transfer to SHSU more easily. |
David Payne, Sam Houston State University provost and vice
president for Academic Affairs, and Millicent Valek, president
of Brazosport College, recently signed an articulation agreement
that will help with the transfer of community college students
to Sam Houston State.
Agreements such as those signed by SHSU and a number of area
community colleges allow joint admission for students of both
schools, and a number of additional advantages, such as the
reverse transfer of hours earned at SHSU to apply toward a
community college degree.
“If a student leaves the community college before they
earn their associate’s degree, which is the most frequent
thing, we're making it possible for them to transfer work
from Sam Houston back and count it towards the degree, so
that they can still get their associate's degree in addition
to the bachelor's degree,” said David Burris, SHSU's
articulation agreement coordinator.
Students who fulfill the admission requirements of both schools
and are admitted jointly can utilize facilities and programs
offered by both. Students can attend both schools simultaneously,
get an SHSU picture ID, have student access to SHSU sporting
events and access to SHSU computers, including an SHSU e-mail
account.
State legislators including Lois Kolkhorst, Glenda Dawson
and Gonzalo Barrientos have hailed the agreements as significant
steps in the state's Closing the Gaps initiative to make higher
education available to more Texans.
In addition to Brazosport College, SHSU now has agreements
with Alvin Community College, Angelina College, Austin Community
College, Blinn College, Hill College, Houston Community College,
Lee College, Navarro College, North Harris Montgomery Community
College and San Jacinto College.

Centers To Give Students ‘Jump-Start’
On Job Search
The SHSU Counseling Center and SHSU Career Services will
help students "Jump-Start Your Career Search" with
a program designed to help the decision-making process on
Wednesday (April 19).
Through this interactive and informative program, students
will be able to assess and process the role that their values,
interests, personality, and skills play in the career decision-making
process, according to Career Services director Pam Laughlin.
The program will be held for four consecutive weeks on Wednesdays,
and each event will be held from 3-4:30 p.m. in the Career
Services building.
Among the areas the workshop will address are choosing a major
or career path, feedback for previous career testing, and
support and feedback with the decision-making process.
“It is our hope to particularly serve students who may
have a need to re-examine their career path as the semester
draws to a close,” Laughlin said.
Refreshments will be provided.
