McLane To Speak Monday
Drayton McLane, chairman of the McLane Group and chairman
and chief executive officer of the Houston Astros Baseball
Club, will be this spring's President's Speaker Series guest.
McLane will speak at 11 a.m. Monday (April 24) in the Beto
Criminal Justice Center's Killinger Auditorium.
He earned his business degree at Baylor University in 1958
and a master's degree in marketing at Michigan State University
in 1959.
He learned his family business, a wholesale grocery distribution
center, from the ground up, loading trucks on the night shift
for 18 months before moving into management as vice president
of purchasing. He served 14 years as general manager of operations,
becoming president and CEO of McLane Company in 1978 and chairman
in 1992.
During his years with the company, he helped his father build
a grocery distribution network that served convenience stores,
supermarkets, and the fast-food industry nationwide. He improved
the distribution system through technology and expanded the
business from $3 million to $19 billion a year.
In 1990 the McLane Company merged with Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.,
and he accepted the position of vice chairman of Wal-Mart.
He resigned his positions as chairman of McLane Company and
vice chairman of Wal-Mart in 1994 to devote more time to his
responsibilities as the chairman of the McLane Group, a holding
company, which he had founded in 1992.
The President’s Speaker Series was created in January
2002 by James F. Gaertner, SHSU president, to introduce Sam
Houston State University students, many of whom are first
generation college students, to people who are living successful
and principled lives. It is supported by a grant from long-time
SHSU benefactor Lu Ellen Gibbs.
Previous speakers include Gene Stallings, Dave Dravecky, Debbi
Fields, Mickey Herskowitz, Ken Jennings and David Robinson.
