SHSU Update For Week Of Feb. 19

Nighttime Event To Stir Up Mayhem

Students will have the ability to check out the new addition to the Health and Kinesiology Center, cause a little mayhem and possibly win $500 with the Department of Recreational Sports’ annual event on Wednesday (Feb. 22).

Midnight Mayhem, which will consist of a variety of games and activities, will be held from 7-11:59 p.m. in the HKC.

The night will include putting and eating contests, from 7:30-8 p.m.; musical chairs and tug-o-war, from 8-8:30 p.m.; a Texas Hold’Em tournament, from 8-10:30 p.m., with finals being held from 10:30 -11:30 p.m.; Simon Says and hot shot, from 8:30-9 p.m.; and dodgeball, from 10-11:30 p.m.

Other activities hosted for students include Xbox and Dance Dance revolution and Xbox tournaments, laser tag, the climbing wall, and inflatables.

“I’m looking forward to seeing people have fun with the laser tag,” said Jeff Handy special events supervisor. “It’s going to be huge.”

Rounding out the evening, at 11:50 p.m., the department will give out raffle prizes and ten lucky students will have a shot at winning $500 by making a goal from half court.

Free food and even t-shirts will be handed out.

Tournament registration will be held until 5 p.m. on Feb. 21 for students who are interested in participating.

SHSU To Celebrate Mardi Gras Cajun Style

The Sam Houston State and Huntsville communities will have the opportunity to celebrate Mardi Gras the Cajun way with the university’s fourth annual festival on Thursday (Feb. 23).

The event will feature the Cajun music band Jambalaya with guest artist D.L. Menard, both of whom have been playing at the event since its inception, according to interim dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences Terry Thibodeaux.

“He’s (Menard is) an old-time Cajun musician and is one of the most famous Cajun musicians still living today,” Thibodeaux said. “The core of the band has been together for over 20 years. They’re led by Terry Huval and he plays several instruments.”

Before the dance kicks off, at 8 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom, Joe Paris will give free Cajun dance lessons to students and Huntsville residents at 7 p.m. in the ballroom.

“Basically, you can dance to any Cajun song with either a two-step, which is slightly different from a Texas two-step, or a waltz,” Thibodeaux said. “There’s also a different kind of dancing called zydeco dancing, but this is not a zydeco band. This is a traditional Cajun band. They play some wonderful dance music, and we have a good time every year.”

The band visits SHSU annually because they speak to the English 375 class, “Texas Crossroads,” as well as play some music.

Thibodeaux said the Mardi Gras celebration allows people to learn about the culture and also breaks down stereotypes related to the Cajun people and culture.“I think a lot of times the Cajun culture is misunderstood because of some of the images and impressions that are given from mass media and even in restaurants,” he said. “What you see labeled as Cajun oftentimes is not authentic at all.”

Drinks will be sold at the dance, which is expected to end at 10:30 p.m.

Business Career Fair Draws More Than 50 Companies

More than 50 organizations will be on the Sam Houston State University campus seeking employees and interns during the College of Business Administration’s Spring 2006 Business Career Fair on Tuesday (Feb. 21).

The event will be open for all students and alumni from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.

“The college sponsors this event for the benefit of all students of all disciplines and everyone is welcome,” said R. Dean Lewis, COBA dean. “You do not have to be a business major to attend.”

First-time registrants include ExxonMobil, Ineos, the Houston Chronicle, Parker Drilling Management Resources, Edward Jones, AIG, Houston Wire and Cable and Worldwide Express.

Returning organizations include Anadarko Petroleum, CenterPoint Energy, Temple-Inland, Target Stores, the Federal Reserve Bank, the Internal Revenue Service, the Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Customs.

“All students can benefit from going to the career fair, whether they are currently in the job market or not,” said Margaret Quarles, senior assistant to the dean and event coordinator.

Freshmen should attend in order to build confidence when speaking with recruiters and to start making some business contacts; sophomores should ask about internships, practice their interviewing skills and make more contacts; juniors should network in earnest to put future job offers in the pipeline; and seniors should focus on jobs currently available with specific organizations, according to Quarles.

“Many recruiters keep students’ resumes on file for a long time, so participation in the career fair can increase the number of job opportunities presented to you when you need them most,” she said. “We know of several graduating seniors who received job offers from recruiters they met back when they were sophomores or juniors.”

Professional dress is not required to attend the career fair, but students are encouraged to dress neatly and to bring several copies of a well-prepared resume.

Fore more information or a complete list of registered organizations, visit the College of Business Administration Web site at www.shsu.edu/coba and click on the “Career Fair” link.

Pierpont Counselor To Serve As Second Speaker

Senior marketing counsel with Pierpont Communications in Houston Denise Patrick will serve as the second speaker for the Piney Woods Entrepreneurship and Small Business Success Program series on Thursday (Feb. 23).

The luncheon, sponsored by SHSU’s Small Business Development Center and the College of Business Administration, will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Center in West Hill Mall in Huntsville and is hosted free for business owners and managers.

Patrick, who has provided advertising and marketing services to over 2,000 firms since 1989, will discuss “Staying in Touch with Customers and Prospects,” offering high impact/low cost marketing tactics “that will take you all the way to the bank,” according to Ce Cowart Schlicher, training coordinator at the SBDC.

Currently serving on the Marketing Committee and the Business Development Committee for The Greater Houston Partnership, Patrick has been awarded a National Certification in Entrepreneurial Education from the Center of Entrepreneurial Leadership at the Kauffman Foundation.

“As one of 18 entrepreneurs originally nominated for certification, Denise was the only entrepreneur in the United States to receive this coveted credential,” Schlicher said.

The Entrepreneurship and Small Business Success Program is free due an educational grant from the AT&T/SBC Excelerator program, as well as university funding.

This program, themed this year as “Managing Communications and Technology for Small Business Success,” focuses on enhancing small business through concentrating on entrepreneurship skills, Schlicher said.

The program will last approximately two hours, including lunch, and those interested in attending should reserve their place by Feb. 21 by calling the SBDC at 936.294.3737.

Theatre Prof To Discuss Shakespeare Controversy

In the midst of what has become a controversial theory regarding famous author and playwright William Shakespeare, one SHSU professor will voice his opinion on the issue based on years of research.

Ron Song Destro, SHSU theatre professor, will discuss his findings during “Who Really Was William Shake-speare?” a free lecture that will be held on Tuesday (Feb. 21) at 7 p.m. in the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage Theatre.

Destro, who believes Shakespeare's true identity was disguised, studied the topic for the last seven years and bases his belief on several factors, including evidence that the true Shakespeare had a vast knowledge of areas unlikely for a grain dealer to be educated in and that Shakespeare’s daughters were barely literate, which doesn’t seem likely for such a literary genius, he said.

"When he died, there was no mention of books or manuscripts in his will," Destro said. "Back then, if you had them, it would be common to put them in a will."

Destro contends the best candidate for the real Shakespeare is the 17th Earl of Oxford, Edward De Vere, one of the more accomplished writers of that time whose early writing styles were very similar to that of Shakespeare.

De Vere, who graduated from Cambridge at 14, received a Master of Arts degree at 16 and studied law at the prestigious Gray's Inn, not only had family members who were accomplished writers but owned several books that would have the information Shakespeare used in his writing, Destro said.

For more information on the lecture, call the theatre department at 936.294.1338.

Gospel Artists To Perform At Coliseum

Tickets are currently on sale for contemporary gospel artist Kirk Franklin, who will perform at SHSU’s Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum on March 21 as part of his “Hero Tour.”

The concert, which will also feature artist Mary Mary, will begin at 7 p.m.

Since his debut album, 1993’s “Kirk Franklin and the Family,” Franklin has been one of the brightest stars in contemporary gospel music.

The album spent 100 weeks on the gospel charts, crossed over to the R&B charts, and became the first gospel debut album to go platinum.

Since that album, Franklin has gone on to win three Grammy Awards, 33 Stellar and nine Dove Awards.

Now after more than a decade on the charts, the biggest selling contemporary gospel artist in Soundscan history is poised once again to make a resounding debut, this time in Huntsville.

Reserved floor seats are $50, lower reserved seats are $40, and general admission seats are $30.

Coliseum Box Office hours through March 21 are Monday through Wednesday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Thursday and Friday, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Saturdays, from noon to 3 p.m.; and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the day before the show.

The box office, located on the west side of the coliseum at door one, will be closed on March 11 and March 18.
