Health Services for Students

Not feeling well? Don't know what's wrong? Then head over to the Student Health Center, which is available to all students enrolled at Sam Houston State University.

According to the Student Health Center mission statement the clinic exists to provide comprehensive routine health services and health education to all currently enrolled students of Sam Houston State University.

Figures recently released by the Health Center indicate that some 3,000 students schedule appointments there each semester.

"The Student Health Center strives to provide quality care in a timely manner and at significant economic savings," said Michelle Lovering, M.P.H., Health Programming Coordinator" To this end, the Student Health Center enables a student to persist in their academic endeavors with a minimum of disruption."

The services that the SHC provides to currently enrolled students are: office visits for routine illness and minor injury, referral services, nursing care, allergy injections, TB testing, immunizations, women’s health services, physical exams for school, work, and sports, wound care/dressing changes, minor suturing and suture removal, pharmacy, laboratory testing, anonymous HIV testing, Sexually Transmitted Infection screenings, asthma management, and health education.

Not only is the SHC a clinic but also an in-house pharmacy, which recently reopened in fall 2005. Students now won't have to deal with the hassle of going to another pharmacy to get their prescription medicine. The cost of prescription medicine from the SHC compared to a retail pharmacy can be substantially lower.
The only other cost to students can be some laboratory examinations the doctor may need to do to determine illness.

The medical staff consists of Tom Hill, medical doctor; Crystal Birdsong, nurse practitioner; Lorna Wadsworth, registered nurse; Ana Maiorano, licensed vocational Nurse; Frieda Turner, Licensed Vocational Nurse; Patricia (Pat) Luna, medical technologist; and Denise Irby, pharmacist.

Staff members are professionally trained and accredited in the medical field.

The SHC is located at the corner of Avenue J and Bearkat Blvd.

For more information, visit the Health Center Web site.
