SHSU Update For Week Of June 18

Sam Students, Mavs Fans Win Trip To Miami

Mavs fans
SHSU students Corey Ray and Dustin Joubert (from left), along with Taylor Ray and Sam Hudson, won an all-expenses paid trip to see the Miami Heat play the Dallas Mavericks in game three of the NBA finals last week for being some of the "craziest" Mavs fans.

Think you're a big sports fan? You'd probably have to get up pretty early in the morning to beat out the craziest Mavericks fans.

Dustin Joubert, Corey Ray, Taylor Ray and Sam Hudson won an all-expenses paid trip to Miami to see the NBA's game 3, Dallas Mavericks vs. Miami Heat.

Joubert and Corey Ray go to Sam Houston State University, but all four are high school friends from Coppell, Texas. They have been painting themselves blue to show their support and win free seats to Mavericks games for 3 or 4 years.

When American Airlines offered the trip to Miami for painted fans who demonstrated the craziest antics in support of their team, Joubert and his friends were chosen.

"The best part was going to the game and seeing Miami. We ended up losing by two points, so it was a bittersweet trip," Joubert said.

He added that the paint takes about 20-30 minutes to scrub off and gets all over everything.

Area Youth To Perform ‘Charlotte’s Web’

Thirty-six area youth will tell the story of Wilbur and his good friend Charlotte during the Children’s Theatre Festival production of “Charlotte’s Web,” June 20-22.

The performances, sponsored by Sam Houston State University’s Department of Theatre and Dance and the Huntsville Arts Commission, will be held at 7 p.m. nightly at the SHSU University Theatre Center’s Mainstage Theatre.

E.B. White’s timeless tale has received much praise throughout the years.

Called “the best American children’s book of the past 200 years” by the Children’s Literature Association, “Charlotte’s Web,” tells the story of a loving young pig named Wilbur who, with the help of his owner Fern, an extraordinary spider named Charlotte and a community of barn yard animals, tries to avoid being butchered.

The story of love and friendship takes the audience on a journey from Zuckerman’s farm to the County Fair, where Wilbur must win the blue ribbon in order to save his life.

The show, with a cast of youth from 10-16 years old, is directed by theatre and dance department chair Penelope Hasekoester.

The assistant director is theatre alumna Karen Roberts, stage manager is theatre major Jennifer Lucy, and designers include theatre staff Patti Osborne (costumes), Larry Routh (set), and theatre major Richard Chamblin (lights).

Tickets are $5 for adults and $2 for children 12 years old and younger.
