Update For Week Of March 19
Ring Ceremony Scheduled For
April 6
Sam Houston State University juniors and seniors will walk
across a stage on April 6, not to receive their diplomas just
yet, but to receive their official class rings at the university’s
third Official Ring Ceremony.
The event will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Austin Hall. In case
of inclement weather, the event will be held in the Bernard
G. Johnson Coliseum.
“The Alumni Association, along with Student Services,
is anxiously anticipating the third Official University Ring
Ceremony,” said Emily deMilliano, assistant director
for Alumni Relations. “Last year our attendance and
participation was wonderful.
“We are looking for another great year and are excited
students are participating in the new SHSU tradition,”
she said.
Check-in will begin at 4:30 p.m. on the day of the ceremony,
and participants must arrive no later than 6 p.m.
After the event, a group picture and reception will be held,
and orders for individual pictures will also be taken.
Reservations must be received in the Alumni Relations Office
by March 31 to ensure participation.
Guest seating is limited.
A shuttle service will be provided from Bowers Stadium and
paid parking will be available at the University Parking Garage.

Excellent Staff Nominations
Sought
Sam Houston State University is seeking three SHSU staff
members who have excelled in his or her job, demonstrated
a commitment to excellence in service and shown meritorious
performances for its annual Staff Excellence Award and Recognition
of Service Program.
Nominations can be made online at http://www.shsu.edu/~hrd_www/excellence/
through April 3.
The recipients of the award will include one exempt and two
non-exempt staff employees. Non-exempt employees are those
subject to overtime pay.
A recipient must be a full-time, non-temporary staff member
with a minimum of two years service at time of nomination;
demonstrate outstanding abilities, innovative ideas, efficient
operations, high level of motivation; be respected by the
university community; and cannot be a previous recipient.

Each award will include a financial stipend.
Any full-time SHSU faculty or staff member can nominate, and
faculty and staff may nominate more than one person. Selections
are made by the university’s eight-member staff excellence
committee.

mail at Box 2356 SHSU.

TSUS Chancellor To
Discuss Education
Texas State University System Chancellor Charles R. Matthews
will discuss "Higher Education in the 21st Century"
at 11 a.m. on March 29 in the Smith-Hutson Building’s
Mafrige Auditorium at Sam Houston State University.
Matthews, who has called education “Texas' greatest
need,” is the college's “Executive-in-Residence”
for the 2006 spring semester.
“An educated citizenry, after all, is our state's most
valuable resource,” he said. “Therefore, we pursue
academic excellence knowing that education is the key to Texas'
future.”
Matthews earned his bachelor’s degree at the University
of Texas at Dallas, his master’s in public administration
from Texas State University-San Marcos and is completing his
doctoral studies at the University of Texas at Austin in higher
education administration.
He has numerous accomplishments in business, civic leadership
and government.
Texas Gov. Rick Perry appointed Matthews chancellor on Feb.
1, 2005.
The Texas State University System has nine member universities
which are: Angelo State University, Lamar Institute of Technology,
Lamar State College-Orange, Lamar State College-Port Arthur,
Lamar University, Sam Houston State University, Sul Ross State
University, Sul Ross State University-Rio Grande College,
Texas State University-San Marcos.

Third Piney Woods Lecture
To Be Held March 23
Diane Stroud, from Stroud Training Systems of Houston, will
bring 20 years of experience in sales, marketing and training
to the third Piney Woods Entrepreneurship and Small Business
Success Program on Thursday (March 23).
The seminar, entitled "Understanding Social Styles-Your
Key to Building Effective Relationships,” and includes
lunch, will begin at 11:30 a.m. at the Community Center in
West Hill Mall in Huntsville.
A native Houstonian and graduate of the University of Houston
who has traveled extensively, Stroud is a member of the National
Speakers Association and the American Society for Training
and Development, according to Ce Cowart Schlicher, training
coordinator for SHSU’s Small Business Development Center.
She is also a life member of the Speakers Committee of the
Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
“She strives to impact bottom line results by improving
customer loyalty and employee productivity,’ Schlicher
said. “Her workshops are interactive and packed with
information and ideas that are easy to implement.”
The program is scheduled to end at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Air Force To Bring
‘Singing Sergeants’ To Campus
Tickets are still available for the United States Air Force
Band and Singing Sergeants performance on Thursday (March
23).
The concert, which is free and open to the general public,
will be held at 7 p.m. in the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum
Those who obtain tickets from the Huntsville Item will be
granted entry to the coliseum from 6-6:45 p.m. to choose their
seats. Those who do not get tickets before the show will also
be admitted free, but only 15 minutes prior to the show.

Education Professor To
Discuss Her Life
Carol Parker, associate professor in SHSU’s department
of educational leadership and counseling, will share her roots
with the student body on Wednesday (March 22).
The speech, part of the “Grassroots: A Series of Conversations
on Leadership in a Diverse Community” lectures, will
be held at 5 p.m. in Academic Building 4’s Olson Auditorium.
Parker will accept questions from the audience about her life,
as well as discuss growing up in Huntsville, attending SHSU
and her career path, among other things.
“She has overcome significant challenges to build a
successful and respected career in her discipline,”
said Bernice Strauss, director of academic support programs
for the Student Advising and Mentoring Center. “She
is a wonderful role model for our students.”
Following the lecture, there will be a reception in the SAM
Center, located in AB4 Suite 210.
The event is sponsored by the SAM Center’s academic
support programs; the Elliott T. Bowers Honors Program; International
Hispanic Association; Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Inc.;

Campus To Open For
Potential Students March 25
Prospective students will have the opportunity to visit
the Sam Houston State University campus to see what the university
has to offer on March 25.
Saturdays@Sam, sponsored by the Visitor Center, will begin
with check-in and parent coffee from 8-9 a.m. in the Bernard
G. Johnson Coliseum, followed by an opening session from 9-11
a.m.
Throughout the day, students and their parents can meet with
academic advisers at the university’s Student Advising
and Mentoring Center, have academic sessions with two different
colleges of potential majors, tour residence halls and the
campus, attend an organizations fair, and get information
from various departments on campus.
Breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase throughout
the day at the Johnson Coliseum concession stands. Lunch will
also be available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Café
Belvin for $5.40 and the Paw Print.

Opera Workshop To Celebrate
Mozart’s Life, Works
The SHSU School of Music will celebrate the 250th birthday
of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart during an opera workshop on Thursday
(March 23).
The single performance will be held at 4:30 p.m. in the Recital
Hall.
Musicology area coordinator Sheryl Murphy-Manley will present
a lecture, entitled "The Life and Times of Mozart and
His Operas,” addressing Mozart's life, the period in
which he lived and how this influenced his music in general,
and his operas specifically, according to director of operatic
studies Mary Kay Lake.
The workshop will also perform scenes from such operas as
“La Finta Giardiniera,” “Batien und Bastienne,”
“Le Nozze di Figaro,” and “Die Zauberflote.”
“All the scenes will be sung in their original languages
with surtitles projected overhead,” Lake said.
Both the lecture and the performance are free and open to
the public.
Another opera workshop, with several performances, is scheduled
April 6 and April 8-9.

Alumna’s Performance
To Benefit Humane Society
SHSU alumna Melanie Holliday will take the SHSU and Huntsville
communities on "A Musical Journey from Vienna to Texas"
with opera, operetta and Broadway favorites at a concert to
benefit the Rita B. Huff Humane Society on Friday (March 24).
The world famous opera singer will perform at 7:30 p.m. at
the Old Town Theater.
Holliday, who received her degree in opera at the University
of Indiana, performed with the Vienna Volksopera for more
than 15 years in more than 20 roles.
Among others her special roles included “Valencienne”
in “The Merry Widow,” “Adele” in “The
Bat” and “Olympia” in “The Tales of
Hoffmann.”
An international career has taken the artist to all the major
music festivals of Europe, where she has performed at the
finest concert locations at the side of famous partners and
appeared in many TV shows.
Tickets are $30 for the main level and $20 for the balcony
section. Student prices are $10 less.
The tickets are now on sale at Elkins Lake Real Estate; at
the Rita B. Huff Humane Society, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and
the Main Street Office, at 1203 University Ave., on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays, from 2-5 p.m.

Second Study Skills Series
To Begin March 20
The Student Advising and Mentoring Center will teach students
the basics of “studying smart” with its second
Study Skills Workshop series beginning Monday (March 20).
The six-week, one-hour sessions will cover such topics as
procrastination, time management, test-taking strategies,
reading textbooks and note taking, and stress management.
Multiple sessions will be held daily to accommodate student
schedules.

‘Mercenaries’
To Go ‘Behind The Joystick’
Sunshine and Tri Do, “mercenaries” from Pandemic
Studios, will discuss producing the artwork for the video
games “Full Spectrum Warrior” and “Star
Wars Battlefront” on Thursday (March 23).
“Behind the Joystick” will be held at 6:30 p.m.
in Art Building F’s Animation Lab 107.
Pandemic Studios designs images for Playstation 2, Xbox and
for computers.
The studio's full-fuelled, award-winning creations have been
splashed across the covers of every major gaming magazine.
Among the games they have worked on are “Star Wars Battlefront
II,” “Mercenaries,” “Dark Reign 2”
and “Army Men RTS.”

Edmonson Named Ambassador
For A&M-Commerce
Stacey Edmonson, associate professor in SHSU’s educational
leadership and counseling department, has been selected to
be the alumni ambassador for Texas A&M-Commerce within
the education administration department.
Edmonson will be the alumni ambassador for 2006. It is the
highest honor the educational administration department can
give to one of their graduates.
A ceremony recognizing Edmonson and other ambassadors will
take place April 13.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Texas Ballroom, inside
the Memorial Student Center on the Texas A&M University-Commerce
campus.
Edmonson received her Bachelor of Arts in English at Texas
A&M University in 1993, and her Master of Education in
educational administration in 1997, along with her doctoral
degree in educational administration from Texas A&M University-Commerce
in 2000.
Edmonson has taught at SHSU since August 2000.
Prior to coming to SHSU, she was a principal at Lake Country
Learning Center in the Quitman school district in Quitman.
Edmonson is president of the Texas Professors of Educational
Administration.
She is an active member of the University Council for Educational
Administration, American Educational Research Association,
National Council for Professors of Educational Administration,
Education Law Association, and Association for Supervision
and Curriculum Development.
