Phonathon Seeks Student
Callers
Since its inception in 2003, the SHSU Phonathon has raised
more than $610,000 in pledges for the university’s Annual
Fund, collecting a higher amount of pledges with each passing
year, according to Phonathon manager Brian Jordy.
In order to continue with its success and continue to grow,
the Phonathon is seeking 10-12 student callers to work in
the office beginning this June.
Callers solicit money from SHSU alumni and friends Sundays
through Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. each evening. The positions
are part time, from June 1 through July 31, and pay minimum
wage.
Students also will have the opportunity to return to the position
when calling begins again in the fall.
Students should be great communicators, demonstrate leadership
skills and attention to detail and accuracy, and exhibit professional
behavior.
In addition, student callers must have a minimum 2.0 grade
point average, and a knowledge of the SHSU campus and activities
would be beneficial, according to the job description.
Those interested should bring a resume and a State of Texas
application, which can be obtained in the Human Resources
Office in Estill Building Room 334, to the Phonathon Office,
located in Frels Building Room 114.

Kolkhorst To Speak At Small-Business
Luncheon
State Rep. Lois W. Kolkhorst will address area small business
owners at a celebration luncheon sponsored by SHSU’s
Small Business Development Center on June 1.
The luncheon, which will begin at 11:30 a.m. and end at 1:30
p.m., will be held in the Community Center at West Hill Mall.
“This luncheon celebration is to honor area businesses
for their dedication and hard work,” said SBDC director
Bob Barragan. “This past year has been an especially
trying one for our business owners in light of two disastrous
hurricanes.”
The event will also recognize the “2006 Reader’s
Choice Awards” from The Huntsville Item, a co-sponsor
of this event.
Other co-sponsors include: City of Huntsville, Huntsville-Walker
County Chamber of Commerce, Walker County, The Rotary Club
of Huntsville, Houston-Galveston Area Council, West Hill Mall
and the U. S. Small Business Administration.
There are over 1.7 million small businesses in Texas, according
to the Small Business Administration’s Office of Advocacy.
These small businesses contribute significantly to the economic
growth since they make up almost all employer firms in the
state, Barragan said.
The luncheon is free, but seating is limited
For more information or to make reservations, call the SBDC
at 936.294.3737.
