Summit To Teach Rights, Responsibilities Of Drinking
The Alcohol Abuse Initiative will proactively educate SHSU
students about risky alcohol consumption during a free, interactive
summit on Sept. 8-9.
The summit, open to all students, will place special emphasis
on risk management within student organizations and the legal
and social ramifications of irresponsible choices.
“This is all in an effort to keep students safe, out
of legal trouble and healthy,” said Michelle Lovering,
AAI member and Student Health Center health programming coordinator.
University President James F. Gaertner, local officials, campus
leaders and other guests will discuss alcohol consumption
with students one-on-one and in breakout sessions throughout
the event.
On Friday, students also will have the opportunity to network
with law enforcement and judicial representatives during a
happy hour featuring mocktails, snacks, and interactive games.
On Saturday morning, national trainer and presenter Mary Hill,
who developed and facilitated the Partners in Prevention Consortium
for the State of Texas to enforce underage drinking laws,
will lead a discussion.
“She will bring her extensive background in the field
and inexhaustible drive to change the culture of college campuses,”
Lovering said, adding that Hill also currently serves as a
consultant for Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, as well
as associate emeritus for the U.S. Department of Education,
Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Drug Prevention.
Other breakout session topics include a discussion of alcohol
references on social networking Web sites such as facebook.com
and MySpace.com; advice for how to help a friend with an alcohol
problem; and a walk through the legal processes for alcohol-related
violations with help from a local judge, defense attorney,
police officers and a TABC officer.
In addition, on Saturday morning, the AAI will be formally
presented with the AAA College and University Drinking and
Driving Prevention Award.
Students who attend the summit are able to earn co-curricular
transcript credit and will have the opportunity to win prizes
either as an individual or for their student organization.
The top five student organizations with the highest representation
at the summit will receive a cash prize to their organization;
the residence hall or house with the highest representation
will be given a pizza party sponsored by the AAI; and individual
students who attend will have the opportunity to win prizes
as well, Lovering said.
Registration forms can either be printed from www.shsu.edu/aai,
picked up in the Student Activities Office in the LSC Suite
328 or students can register online at the AAI Web site through
the morning of Sept. 8.
