Students To Display Art At Houston Show

Studio art majors in Sam Houston State University’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program will exhibit their works in the Annual Houston ArtCrawl on Saturday (Nov. 18).

Curated by students in the art department’s “Museum and Gallery Practices” class, the 14th annual art crawl will be held from 2-9 p.m. at the Commerce Street Artists Warehouse in Houston.

A reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. on that day.

Eight SHSU artists, who applied for and were granted studio space at SHSU on a competitive basis, will exhibit their work at CSAW after being chosen by SHSU’s student curators, according to art department slide librarian Debbie Davenport.

Students whose works will be on display include Kim Cook, who “uses glass and ink to make translucent layers of abstract form in her sculpture and wall pieces;” Jennifer Guest, who “uses kitchsy grotesque imagery to create surreal psychodramas similar in style to some of the Chicago Hairy Who artists;” Katy Harris, who “creates an abstract image using ceramic tiles and hair that represent a kind of diaristic game;” and Daniel McFarlane, who “layers surrealistic images to play with space and meaning in a large abstract painting,” Davenport said.

Also exhibiting are Sam Masterson, who “illustrates his state of mind using graffiti painting techniques to make figurative images;” Katy Scherler, whose “36-foot canvas is a personal, dramatic and epic narrative;” Amanda Sparks, who “uses an ironic form of repetition in her sculpture of a tree that sprouts matches;” and Sam Sullivan, who “draws with thread and camouflages found objects, in his absurd doodles,” she said.

The ArtCrawl brings together sculpture, painting, drawing and works in a mixed media by more than 100 artists.

The exhibit also will be on display through Nov. 30 at the Commerce Street Artists Warehouse, located at 2315 Commerce Street.

Students in the “Museum and Gallery Practices” class have curated exhibits on the campus of SHSU and visited museums and galleries in Houston, Austin and Dallas to learn the operations, procedures and purposes of art spaces.
