Who Says There Is Nothing To Do In Huntsville?
Looking
for fun activities this summer? The Huntsville Walker County
Chamber of Commerce sponsors events that will pique anyone's
interest. Events and activities range from workshops to fairs
with jubilees and celebrations in between.
The month of June offers the Juneteenth celebration on
June 17, in remembrance of emancipation. Activities are
planned at the Martin Luther King Neighborhood Center.
The Texas Genealogy fair is an event for individual researchers
to meet and swap information. Lynna Shuffield, Richard Hooverson
and Caroline Crimm will highlight the afternoon with lectures
on the Civil War, Texas development and the battles of the
Alamo and San Jacinto.
The event will be held at 9 a.m. on June 24 at the Walker
County Fairgrounds. Admission is $5 if purchased in advance
and $8 at the door.
Wear your red, white and blue while attending the Old Fashioned
Fourth of July celebration. At 10 a.m., a children's parade
will kick off the celebration and will end at the courthouse
in downtown. Patriotic music, performances on the courthouse
lawn and food will be available. Informational and retail
booths will be set up along the square for those who want
to find out what is available in Huntsville and learn about

Odgen's Country Jubilee, a Branson, Mo., style variety show,
will include country and gospel music, along with comedy
appropriate for all ages. Performance will be held at the
Gibbs Center for the Performing Arts in the Old Town Theatre
on July 15. Ticket prices are $11 per person and $10 for

Finally, the second annual film festival will be held July
21–22. Ticket prices are $5 per movie and $27 for
dinner and movie, when available. Profits received will
benifit the Main Street Foundation for infa-structure maintenance.
Movies that will be shown are, "Amelie," a French
movie with English subtitles at 8 p.m. optional Parisian
meal prepared by the Stardust Room will be served prior
to movie. Stardust Room is located downtown on the square. "E.T.
the Extra Terrestrial" will show July 22 at 9:30 a.m.
"To Hell and Back," the true WWII story of Audie
Murphy, the most decorated soldier in U.S. history, will
show at 1:30 p.m. "Raiders of the Lost Ark" will
show at 8 p.m., with an optional Moroccan-themed meal at
the Stardust Room.
Tickets may be purchased at Kaldi's Coffee House, Cloud
9 Coffee Bar, Mt. Vernon Gift shop, Stardust Room and Main
Street Office.
