Duffy Co-Authors Book on Successful Women

Jo Ann Duffy
Jo Ann Duffy
Jo Ann Duffy says that successful women from various countries throughout the Americas have much in common although there are cultural differences.

Duffy, Sam Houston State University professor of management, along with colleagues from other countries in the Americas, recently published a book that summarizes the research they have been conducting over the past six years on that subject.

"Sam Houston has been very supportive to our research team by hosting an international conference about Successful Women in the Americas," said Duffy.

Titled Successful Professional Women of the Americas - From Polar Winds to Tropical Breezes, the book includes chapters covering Argentina to Canada, Barbados to Chile, Brazil, Jamaica, Mexico, St. Vincent as well as the Grenadines and of course, the United States.

The chapters relate the stories of successful women across the Americas, women who are managers, business owners, university professors and administrators, doctors, lawyers and government ministers.

Based on extensive research, including more than 1,100 surveys and 300 interviews of women, the volume aims to explain what these women have in common and how they differ.

"By far fewer women cited having a mentor as their key to success than we expected," said Duffy. "The universal thing they had in common and regarded as most helpful was having the social support of family members and friends. Many of these women are married and listed support from their husbands and also children as a very important factor in their careers."

The workplace barriers to professional success faced by women are also analyzed. Seeking to capture the voices of the women themselves, the authors attempt to explain success in the face of personal, social, organizational, cultural and economic obstacles facing women everywhere.

Another interesting find was that even so there are cultural differences in the different countries in the Americas, the differences among these women are smaller than expected. One thing was particularly apparent among them and that was they reported to be VERY happy with life.

According to the book's publisher, "Successful Professional Women of the Americas will provide fascinating reading for academics, students and researchers focusing on gender studies or business and management. Professional women managers worldwide will also find the book to be of great appeal."

Interested persons may order the book directly from Edward Elgar Publishing in the United States. It will be available in September.

At Sam Houston State University's College of Business Administration, Duffy teaches Strategic Management and Service Management. She is the director of the Gibson D. Lewis Center for Business and Economic Development and past president of the Southwest Academy of Management. Her main research interests include: Women in Leadership, Health Care - especially Long Term Care - Quality, Service Productivity and Service Recovery.
