SHSU Institute Represented at Terrorism Workshop
Sam
Houston State University staff and faculty affiliated with the
Institute for the Study of Violent Groups (ISVG) presented their
research on the ongoing insurgency in Iraq at the "Proteus
Futures Academic Workshop" held August 22-24 at the U.S.
Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
The workshop was sponsored by the Office of the Director of
National Intelligence to highlight cutting-edge academic research
that will help the US Intelligence Community confront the strategic
and transnational threats of the future.
Daniel Mabrey, director of the SHSU institute and a doctoral
student; Chris Hale, information technology director for the
institute and a clinical professor at SHSU; and John Miller,
an assistant professor in the Department of Economics and International
Business in the College of Business Administration, made the
presentation.
Their paper was entitled "New Frontiers in Tactical Terrorism
Analysis: An Evaluation of Machine Learning Techniques to Support
Counter-terrorism Analysts Decision Making for Predicting Culpability
in Terrorist Bombing Attacks in Iraq."
The audience included more than 40 senior defense and intelligence
community officials.
Other presenters were from the National Security Agency (NSA),
the George Mason University Learning Agents Center, the Naval
Post Graduate School, and the Department of Defense - Joint Forces
Command. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss research
in the area of future modeling, simulation and gaming technology
in strategic and operational analysis, decision-making, and experiential
education.
The Institute for the Study of Violent Groups is a federally
funded terrorism research center that is building web-based toolkits
for analyzing open source information on terrorist and extremist
activity throughout the world. It employs more than 20
SHSU students, who perform all the collection and analysis duties.
Richard Ward, associate vice president for research and special
programs, is the principal investigator for the project. The
analyses on the Iraq insurgency are just one of many research
projects currently being conducted at the institute.
For more information on this research and other efforts underway
at the institute, see their Website at: http://www.isvg.org.
