Bearkat OneCard Changes Payment Options

The Bearkat OneCard Office will begin giving students more options for the destination of their payroll and refund checks with a new payment engine starting Wednesday (Nov. 1).

That day, an updated Bearkat OneCard Web site, found at http://www.shsu.edu/onecard/, will allow students to choose separate accounts in which they can have the two forms of funds deposited.

This change is being made in response to student reactions to the change made in August to have all student employees’ refunds and payments directly deposited onto the Bearkat OneCard, according to OneCard director Kristy Vienne.

“What we heard at that time was that a lot of students wanted the ability to send their payroll payment to a different place than where they were sending their refund (from scholarships or residual checks from student loans), but we didn’t have that ability,” Vienne said.

“We just want students to know that we’ve heard them, we’re responding to their needs and we’re giving them that option,” she said. “We understand that they have different financial needs, and we want to honor their needs.”

While the change won’t affect students who have both types of funds sent to the same place—which is what the program will default to without students changing it, the change may affect students who had begun receiving their payroll checks a few days early as a result of the Aug. 1 changes, according to Vienne.

“We’ve been sending our files to the bank three days ahead of time, so that everybody would get their check at the same time (because some banks process direct deposits slower than others),” Vienne said. “Because we were sending it so early, some students had their money before payday, and they’ve grown accustomed—in August, September and October—to getting their money early.

“It was just a kink in the system that some people got it before payday, but now everybody will get it on payday,” she said.

Though the change will take place Nov. 1, students will not see the changes until the Nov. 15 payroll.

Those who want to change their refund or payroll options should make the changes at least two days before the payroll date to ensure that the money is sent to the right place.
