Regents Approve Steam Loop Replacement
The Sam Houston State University campus will no longer look
like Yellowstone Park as the result of action taken Friday by
the university's board of regents.
The Board of
Regents, Texas State University System, held their regular
quarterly meeting on the SHSU campus.
As part of $1.7 million in campus improvements, $500,000
will be spent to fix the west plant steam boiler and the loop
of underground pipes that are considered unrepairable.
The steam boiler
heating loop was installed in 1938. Breaks in the old pipes sometimes
cause the area to look as if steam geysers are venting through
the service grates, especially on cold winter days.
The loop
provides heating for the Evans Complex, Thomason Building,
Rather Communications Building, and Marks Administration Building.
Dabhi Engineering
Associates of Katy was hired to provide architectural and engineering
services needed for the project.
Other campus
improvements include approval of preliminary plans for a $975,000
project to repair and upgrade Belvin Hall's heating, ventilation
and air conditioning system.
Dabhi Engineering
submitted the preliminary plans and was authorized to develop
detailed plans and specifications and to take bids for award
of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning construction
contract.
Also approved
was a $261,114 contract with Restoration Services, Inc. of Houston
for replacement of roofs on a portion of the Criminal Justice
Center as well as the Anne Shaver and Alpha Chi Omega small dorms.
In other SHSU
business, the regents formally approved Raven Village as the
name for the university's newest student housing facility, which
will open in the fall, and increases in room and board rates
that will be effective next fall.
The meal plan
increases average just over 2.9 percent. The 20 meal plan plus
$100 bonus, the 15 meal plan plus $155 bonus, and the 160 meal
plan plus $100 bonus will increase from $1,088 each to $1,120
each. The five-meal plan plus $100 bonus increases from $600
to $618.
Increased costs of operations and inflation pass-throughs
from ARAMARK were cited as reasons for the increases.
Approved room
rate increases are five percent for all housing facilities with
the exception of King Hall, which will increase 10 percent.
King Hall is scheduled to have renovations including rewiring
for card access and bathroom refurbishment.
Rates
for Raven Village were set at $1,820 per semester, the same as
for Sam Houston Village. Rates for the Colony Apartments and
Bearkat Village will not change.
