The Sam Houston State University rodeo team has compiled
honors this spring including 2006 Southern Region rodeo of
the year, Southern Region coach of the year, and qualified
eight members for the College National Finals Rodeo.
During the regional competition SHSU students competed in
steer wrestling, bull riding, team roping, barrel racing,
tiedown roping, breakaway roping, and goat tying. The top
finishers in each in 11 different regions in the U. S. and
Canada advance to the national competition June 11-17 in Casper,
Wyo.
Roger Hanagriff, rodeo team head coach and associate professor
of agribusiness, won the coach of the year award and is eligible
for that national honor, which will be announced during the
Casper event.
"This year I am excited as I am each year that our students
qualify for the college finals,” said Hanagriff. “This
year we have three of the four girls that are returning qualifiers,
so they represent the most experienced team we have sent in
years."

is reserve champion in steer wrestling and Scroggins won third

third place in calf roping.
"Our men's team is made up of some of the strongest consistent

level of expectations and success," said Hanagriff.
The College National Finals Rodeo will be televised on the
