Mass Com Students Win Twice in National Competition

Students in Sam Houston State University's Mass Communication Department recently returned from a national convention in Washington, D. C. with two first place awards.

The Bearkat Sports Report won first place for "Sports Program" and "News 7 Open" won first place in the "Video Program Open" category of the National Broadcasting Society's 43rd Annual National Student Electronic Media Competition.

Patric Sleightholm was the executive producer for both entries.

Other students who shared the honors included Leah Burger, Dustin Dyer, Brian Hernalsteen Zach Schroeder, and Alex Stivers, associate producers of the Bearkat Sports Report.

Also involved in that effort were Kristina Adams, Courtney Lundgren, and Kristen Lundgren, who provided field reports and helped run the studio. Newcomers to the program included Matt Carey, Lisa Lenander, and Jenna Zibton.

Tony DeMars is the faculty adviser for the show, as well as the SHSU chapter of the National Broadcasting Society and KSHU-TV (Channel 7).

The Bearkat Sports Report finished ahead of second and third place entries from Kansas State University. News 7 Open won over Norfolk State and Weber State.

0ther Region 6 members include Stephen F. Austin and Texas State University-San Marcos, as well as 10 others in Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

The Bearkat Sports Report crew was also proud of a recent pre-game show that aired live on KSHU-TV prior to a basketball game in Johnson Coliseum, the fact that one of their clips was shown on ESPN2, and compliments on their contest entry from baseball play-by-play announcer Mike Capps.

Capps, a SHSU graduate who does games for the Round Rock Express, was given a video disc when he came to speak at a recent career fair at SHSU. He said the show's anchors "did a great job of really bringing me down on the field and making me feel as if I am right there."
