More than 400 girl scouts, boy scouts, parents and leaders were
on the Sam Houston State University campus Feb. 25 for the second
annual Scout Saturday at Sam.
The scouts are in leadership development programs that lead
to the highest award in scouting, the Gold Award in Girl Scouting,
and the Eagle Award in Boy Scouting.
A core staff of volunteers from San Jacinto Girl Scouts, Houston
Council of Boy Scouts, and Sam Houston
State Universiy planned and implemented the event. Approximately
50 faculty members facilitated Boy Scout Merit Badges or
Girl Scout Interest Project Patches teaching everything from
chemistry to entrepreneurship.
This year's event was even bigger than last year's inaugural
effort, according to Marilyn Butler, lecturer in economics and
international business, who is the event coordinator.
Scout Ambassadors,
former girl or boy scouts currently attending SHSU, were on
hand to help out in a number of ways.
"They were great ambassadors for Sam," said Butler.
At
noon, scouts had Lunch with the Professor, a brown bag round
table discussion in each of the five colleges about the many
college choices and opportunities for the scouts.
In addition, training and seminar sessions
were offered for the parents for the first time this year.
Sam 136 for Parents was one of the seminars.
Parents
learned about preparing their child for the transition
from home to college, including tips on how to get a new college
student off to a good start and to have a positive first year
experience.
"This was a great day and great opportunity for the scouts
and the University," said Butler.
Sponsors included the Office of Academic Affairs and the American
Democracy Project.
