Deadlines Loom for Study Abroad Courses

The Sam Houston State study aboard program has grown dramatically within the last year. Students from all colleges are now studying aboard, in droves.

Joy Montgomery, graduate assistant in the office of International programs, estimates that close to 150 students will study aboard this summer. The study aboard program allows a student to travel to another university in a different country and take a course or courses in their field of interest.   A student can enroll in a fall, spring, and mini/long summer session.

All the courses that Sam Houston has to offer are fully credited, so students make progress toward their degree while traveling.   There are no requirements on the classification of a student but some colleges may have a requirement of a 2.5 or higher Grade Point Average.

Academicians' say that study aboard programs help students further their knowledge in their field by hands-on lectures, field trips to historical sites, and other experiences.    In addition, they are able to make new friends, experience a whole new culture and enjoy being away from home.

A survey by Today@Sam indicates that deadlines for these courses begin on March 10 and go through March 15.

Although some courses may have different deadlines, prices range from $1,500-$3,000 depending on the program plus tuition.   As of now, a few of the study aboard programs have been closed, so check with the instructor to find out if a program of interest has been closed or not.
