Theatre To Present ‘Best Little Whorehouse’
The department of theatre and dance will take audiences
to Gilbert, Texas, with its production of the classic musical
“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas,” Wednesday
through Saturday (Oct. 11-14).
Show times are at 8 p.m. each day, with a 2 p.m. Saturday
matinee, in the University Theatre Center’s Mainstage
Theatre.
The play, by Larry L. King and Peter Mastersen and music by
Carol Hall, is set in 1974 at the brothel known as Chicken
Ranch under the proprietorship of Miss Mona Stangley, who
takes care of her ladies and remains on good terms with the
town sheriff, Ed Earl Dodd.
Trouble arises when crusading television reporter Melvin P.
Thorpe “uncovers” the illegal activity and threatens
to close the establishment forever.
The cast includes theatre and musical theatre majors Jen Lucy
as Stangley, Derrick Davis as Dodd, Tony Johnson as Thorpe,
Lee Jane Walker as Doatsy Mae, Victoria White as Jewel, Jamy
Gillespie as Angel, Amber Sortino as Shy, Robert Evans as
the Senator, David Deveau as the Governor, Adam Gibbs as Edsel/Bandleader,
Robbie Bardwell as Rufus, Cameron Worthen as CJ, Lindsay McCallum
as Imogene Charlene, and Holly Johnson as Ruby Rae.
Also part of the cast are Chantel Balch-Oliver as Linda Lou;
Nikki Anthony as Beatrice; Michelle Vanegas as Eloise; Shannon
Walsh as Ginger; Nyseli Vega as Dawn; Sarah Reinhardt as Durla;
Megan Caillier as Taddie Jo; Mark Calpalbo, Kendrick Mitchell,
Ryan Calhoun and David Delaney as the Male Doggettes; Ariana
Cook, Jacqui Grady, Rebecca Harris, Ashley Johnson and Christina
Stoup as the Female Doggettes; and a number of other students
as townspeople.
“The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas” is directed
by department chair Penelope Hasekoester, and designers include
theatre faculty members Kristina S. Hanssen, costumes; Gregg
Buck, set; and Eric Marsh, lighting.
The stage manager is theatre major Justin Beard, and the technical
director is faculty member Larry Routh.
Tickets are $12 for general admission and $10 with a senior
citizen or SHSU ID.
The play contains adult language and situations, and children
under three will not be admitted.
