MISS To Host Week For UniDiversity
The Office of Multicultural and International Student Services
will give SHSU some 'UniDiversity' with a week filled with
activities designed to enhance awareness of other cultures,
foster unity within the campus community and celebrate differences.
A “UniDiversity Week Icebreaker” will kick off
the events with ice cream on Monday (April 3), at 4 p.m. in
the Lowman Student Center Ballroom.
On Tuesday, students Willie Dean and Jessica Hererra will
discuss “Zapata versus Pancho Villa,” at 11 a.m.
in LSC Room 304.
The event will focus on “the differences between Zapata
and Pancho Villa and how they compare to Malcolm X and MLK
(Martin Luther King) Jr.,” said Jennifer T. Roberts,
MISS program coordinator.
That afternoon, MISS will host an interactive activity that
explores the discrimination in races and how others are treated
because of race with “Discrimination within My Race,”
with guest speaker Carmelita Pop-Freeman, regional director
of community relations services with the U.S. Department of
Justice, at 2 p.m. in LSC Room 315.
On Wednesday, students will have a taste of Italy with authentic
food, activities and prizes during “Taste of SHSU: Italy,”
at noon in the LSC Mall Area.
Those interested in studying abroad can find out everything
he or she needs during the Study Abroad Information Fair on
Thursday, at 11 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area. This event is co-sponsored
by the Office of International Programs.
“The purpose of this program is to mainly provide different
programs/departments on campus an opportunity to talk personally
with students and provide the information that they have so
that more students can be interested in the possibilities
of coordinating the program in their degree plan and helping
them along the way,” said MISS student assistant Sheeba
Daniel.
That afternoon, political science assistant professor Mitzi
Mahoney will discuss issues in the sex trade industry with
“The Sex Trade Revealed,” at 2 p.m. in LSC Room
315.
Finally, on Friday, MISS will discuss issues surrounding diversity
and multiculturalism at SHSU with a “Diversity Think
Tank Breakfast” at 9 a.m. in LSC 302.
Those who attend the events will earn Multicultural Awareness
Certification points.
