Groups Join to Promote 'Walk Across Texas'
Diseases of the heart are among the leading causes of death
in the United States. Many health experts believe that
physical activity can reduce the chances of developing these
diseases.
To
educate the community about the importance of an active lifestyle
and appropriate nutrition habits, the Texas Cooperative Extension
program and Sam Houston State University are teaming up for the
Walk Across Texas program.
The
event is Monday, Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. at the Intramural Field
1, located on the corner of Bobby K. Marks Drive and Bowers Boulevard
on the Sam Houston State University campus.
"Walk
Across Texas motivates individuals and groups to engage in physical
activity for eight weeks," said Kristin Sulak, one of the event's
promoters. "Participants strive to complete 830 miles without
leaving Huntsville before the end of the eight weeks."
Sulak
said that the Student Health Center and the Public Relations
Student Society of America chapter at SHSU are the primary campus
co-sponsors for the event.
The
entire Sam Houston State University community is invited to participate,
said Sulak. There is no registration fee.
Registration begins at 5 p.m.. Students, faculty, and
staff members can join a group or participate by themselves.
Booths
will be set up to show alternatives to walking and nutrition
information. Participants will get free pedometers upon
registration.
The Orange Pride dance team and Sammy the Bearkat will be making
appearances to get participants motivated. After registration
a commencement walk will follow approximately at 5:30 p.m. Participants
should bring walking shoes.
