State Rep Is Winter Commencement Speaker

State Rep. Bill Zedler will address Sam Houston State University’s
approximately 1,286 graduates during winter commencement ceremonies
Dec. 16.
Preliminary figures from the Graduation Office show that approximately
1,076 have registered to receive bachelor's degrees and 210
have registered to receive master's and doctoral degrees.
An SHSU alumnus, Zedler has served District 96, which is comprised
of part of Tarrant County, since 2003 in the Texas House of
Representatives.
Recently elected to his third term in the Texas House, Zedler
sits on the Business and Industry, Public Health, and Rules
and Resolutions committees and was appointed by the Speaker
of the House and has served on the Select Interim Committee
for Child Welfare and Foster Care and the Communities In Schools
Select Advisory Committee.
As a state representative Zedler has positioned himself as
a conservative defender of limited government, limited taxation,
and free enterprise.
He has been recognized for his views with the “Champion
for Free Enterprise Award,” based on his consistently
conservative voting record, and in 2005, he received “The
Chairman's Award for Courage” from the State Republican
Party.
Zedler received his Master of Business Administration degree
from SHSU in 1967 and then entered the United States Army,
where he served as a hospital personnel officer and ultimately
achieved the rank of first lieutenant.
During his tour of duty in Vietnam, he was awarded the Army
Commendation Medal.
After completing his service in the military, Bill began a
long, successful career in the healthcare industry, working
for Jelco Labs, Baxter Healthcare, Pyxis Corporation and Bridge
Medical.
Zedler and his wife, Ellen, have lived in the Arlington area
for 26 years. They have three children.
Degrees will be conferred at 10 a.m. students from the Colleges
of Arts and Sciences, Criminal Justice, and Humanities and
Social Sciences and at 2 p.m. for students from the Colleges
of Education and Business Administration in the Bernard G.
Johnson Coliseum.
