Families To Join Bearkats For 'Weekend'

Family Weekend Logo

Students and their families will have the opportunity to spend the weekend together at SHSU during this year's Bearkat Family Weekend, Nov. 2-4.

Activities begin on Friday (Nov. 2), when families can play golf at SHSU’s Raven Nest Golf Course at the student rate of $19, plus tax.

Also on Friday, families can cheer on the soccer team as they take on Nicholls State at 7 p.m. at Pritchett Field or head to the Lowman Student Center Theater for the Program Council’s movie night showing of “Transformers," at 7 p.m.

Saturday’s activities begin with check in, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. in the LSC Mall Area; "A Morning with Administrators" continental breakfast from 9-10 a.m. in Austin Hall; and the Parents' Association Annual Meeting, from 10-11 a.m.

Across the street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a Cherokee Indian Culture and Crafts show will be offered by Sam Houston Memorial Museum.

From noon to 2 p.m., SHSU will showcase its departments, while the students showcase their talents through demonstrations and performances, and families can enjoy the taste of a Bearkat Barbeque in the Johnson Coliseum.

Exhibits will be judged and will receive ribbons, including best performance and best display.

"We wanted to put an emphasis on family this year to make sure the entire family was included," said Jeanine Bias, assistant dean of students. "Families are important to students and sometimes include more than just mom and dad."

Saturday afternoon activities will include a classic car cruise-in, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Bowers Stadium north parking lot; the pre-game party from 4-6 p.m. in Bearkat Alley; and the football game versus Nicholls State at 6 p.m. at Bowers Stadium.

Sunday (Nov. 4) morning will round out the weekend with an interdenominational Christian worship service, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in the Farrington Pit, or at the Wesley Foundation Chapel in the event of rain.

Also on Sunday, families can cheer on the soccer team as they take on Southeastern Louisiana at 1 p.m. at Pritchett Field.

The Raven Nest Golf Course will also allow parents to play for the students’ weekend rate of $22 plus tax all day on Saturday and Sunday as well. Raven Nest is located at 457 Interstate-45 South.

The cost to register for the weekend is $5 per person, which includes a welcome gift at check-in, as well as the continental breakfast, Bearkat Barbeque, the pre-game party and registration for door prize drawings that will be given away during the weekend.

Tickets for the football game will be sold separately for $20 for seats with a chair back, $10 for general admission, $5 for children ages 6-12, and children under the age of six are admitted to the game for free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate on game day or at the field house until 4 p.m. on Friday.

For more information, a complete schedule of events, or to register, visit the Parent/Family Weekend Web site or contact the Dean of Students' Office, at 936.294.1785.
