Football 101-Chalk Talk For Women

In Texas, where football is almost a religion, many women already have a fuzzy notion of the rules of the game.

But for those who want a clearer picture and an understanding of why the game is so appealing to so many people, the coaching staff at Sam Houston State University is hosting Football 101--Chalk Talk for Women on Saturday, Aug. 11.

The football clinic, sponsored by State Farm specifically for women, will take place at 6 p.m. in the Ron Randleman Strength and Fitness Center adjacent to Bowers Stadium on the SHSU campus.

Brooke Adams of KSAM radio will serve as the Emcee with KSAM as a supporting sponsor.

It's being billed as a fun, social event as well as an opportunity for women to learn a little more about that attention-grabbing phenomenon that has a hold on the masses from August through January.

The registration charge is $20 each or $140 for a table of eight and includes dinner, a T-shirt and other items from SHSU and State Farm.   On the day of the event, a single registration is $25.

"We are very excited to host this event for the first time here at Sam Houston State and hope to have a good response from women here in the community," Bearkat head football coach Todd Whitten said.

Participants will learn the different responsibilities of the offense, defense and special teams, get a tour of the football facilities, have an opportunity to run out on the field just like the football team does on game day, and obtain instruction from coaches on throwing, catching and other elements of the game.

Participants will also have a chance to meet some of the Bearkat football players.

Those attending are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes and clothing for the active agenda.

Football clinics for women are held all over the country at colleges and universities and are popular at such Texas school as Texas Tech and SMU where the program is an annual event. At Clemson and South Carolina, over 1,000 ladies attend each year.

The clinic has been so successful at Kansas State, the football program is now hosting an advanced version, Football 201, for "graduates" of the Football 101 course.

"Our entire coaching staff looks forward to a fun event where we can hopefully teach the women in attendance more about the game of football," Whitten said.   "This is also a great opportunity for women to come out, have a good time and maybe meet new friends while learning some football at Sam Houston."
