Health Center Earns Three-Year
Accreditation
Approximately three years after deciding to pursue accreditation,
the SHSU Health Center has received the distinction for the
first time from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory
Care.
In addition, the Health Center was awarded the highest degree
of accreditation, a three-year term.
“This achievement is an important milestone in the growth
of our department that has taken place over the past six years,”
said Health Center director Keith Lott. “The favorable
comparison of our departmental operations against the rigorous
standards of a nationally-recognized entity provides formal
confirmation that our department has achieved excellence.
Accreditation is a tangible indicator of how far we have come.”
The accreditation process involves self-assessment by the
organization, as well as a thorough review by the AAAHC’s
expert surveyors.
The on-site survey was conducted this past September, during
which the department’s performance in 24 broad categories,
including “Quality of Care,” “Quality Improvement,”
and “Administration,” were measured against rigorous
and nationally-recognized standards.
SHSU joins the company of only four other public universities
in Texas that have accredited health centers, including Texas
A&M, Texas State-San Marcos, the University of Texas at
Austin and UT-Pan American.
The distinction ensures patients and their families that the
center is providing a high quality of care, Lott said.
“Such an accomplishment is not the result of one person’s
efforts or simplistic tasks completed over a short period
of time,” he said. “This accomplishment is a result
of a sustained group effort effecting significant improvement
in our department’s operation.”
The affiliation with the organization will also allow the
center to receive outside reviews by independent experts in
the field who will provide suggestions on how to further improve
operations.

Ryan To ‘Meet The Team’
At Dinner, Auction
Bearkat baseball fans will have to opportunity to hear Hall
of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, meet the members of the 2007 SHSU
baseball team and help raise money for the program during
the Meet the Players/Night With Nolan Ryan dinner and auction
on Feb. 3.
The event will be held at 6 p.m. in the Lowman Student Center
Ballroom.
With a blazing fastball
and a work ethic like none other, Ryan dominated hitters
for 27 seasons on his way to 5,714 strikeouts, an all-time
record. He is credited in the Guinness Book
of World Records as the fastest pitcher of all time.
A pitch he threw in 1974 was clocked at 101 mph using
coherent infrared radar, which is considered more accurate
than the radar guns used today.
During four decades of prominence, he totaled 324 victories
and a host of major league records. Most notable of his milestones
are seven no-hitters and 12 one-hitters.
The eight-time All-Star fanned a single-season record 383
batters in 1973, and his career strikeouts encompassed 1,176
different players.
"This is a great opportunity for baseball fans,"
said SHSU head baseball coach Mark Johnson. "Fans will
have the opportunity to be in the presence and hear inspirational
words from one of the greatest pitchers in the history of
baseball, but also to meet the special young men who will
be taking the field for the Bearkats in 2007.
“The banquet has all the makings for a very special
occasion," he said.
Tickets for the event are $35 each individual, $50 for couples
and $200 per table, with a maximum of eight at each table.
The evening will feature both live and silent auctions of
various baseball items, with proceeds benefiting the Sam Houston
State baseball enrichment fund, which supports the program
through scholarships and other team expenses.

baseball office at 936.294.4435 or 936.294.4653.

Spring Concerts Tune
Up With Organ Recital
Jay Whatley, assistant professor of keyboard studies, will
kick off the SHSU School of Music’s spring semester
with a solo faculty organ recital on Tuesday (Jan. 16).
The performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. at Huntsville’s
First United Methodist Church, located on the northwest corner
of 11th Street and Sam Houston Avenue.
The recital will feature works for solo organ by some of the
best-known composers of classical music: Johann Sebastian
Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, and Cesar Franck,
as well as one piece by Sigfrid Karg-Elert, a lesser-known
composer, according to Whatley.
“The recital program is centered on works that use as
their basis the German Lutheran chorales of the 15th to the
17th centuries,” he said. “The intention is to
demonstrate the many forms and disguises a composer can utilize
when incorporating a chorale melody into his work.”
Among the pieces Whatley will perform are Choral-Improvisation
on "Nun danket alle Gott," by Karg-Elert; Partita
on "Sei gegrusset, Jesu gutig," by Bach; and five
Chorale Preludes by Bach and Brahms, among others.
The concert will be held off campus “to feature the
magnificent instrument that is housed at First United Methodist
Church, and because there is no organ on campus for such performances,”
Whatley said.
There is no admission cost; however, a goodwill offering will
be taken at the door to benefit the Organ Restoration Fund
at the First United Methodist Church.
For more information, call the School
of Music at 936.294.1360.

Non-Traditional Organization
Seeks New Members
The Non-Traditional Student Organization at SHSU is currently
seeking new members, and faculty, staff participants for the
spring semester.
NTSO was founded in the fall of 2004 and currently has more
than 160 members.
To qualify as a non-traditional student you must be 25 years
or older, returning to school after being away for many years,
returning to school after military service, a mom or a dad,
married, or feel as though “you just feel like you don't
fit in with the rest of the college crowd,” according
to Andrea L. Woodlief, NTSO business manager.
Among the activities planned for the spring are a resume-writing
workshop with Career Services, a time management seminar with
the Student Advising and Mentoring Center, a Spring Fling
dance and a softball game for the non-traditional students.
“We welcome non-traditional students at SHSU, faculty,
staff, and their families to attend our meetings and events,”
Woodlief said. “Our meetings are filled with fun conversations
and provide an opportunity for building new friendships.”
A meeting time for the spring has not yet been determined,
but interested students can receive information about the
organization and sign up to receive news about the group by
visiting the group’s Web site at www.shsu.edu/~org_ntso
or by contacting Woodlief at andreawoodlief@shsu.edu.

Keyboard Prof To Return As
Judge For Conference
Jay Whatley, assistant professor of keyboard studies in
SHSU’s School of Music, has been invited to serve as
an adjudicator for the final round of competitions at the
11th Annual World Piano Pedagogy Conference, to be held this
year in Las Vegas on Nov. 4-7.
This will not be the first time Whatley has served as on the
panel of judges for the conference, which is the largest international
conference dedicated solely to the art of teaching piano.
He also served as an adjudicator for the final round of competitions
at the 10th Annual World Piano Pedagogy Conference, held Oct.
25-28, 2006, in Atlanta, Ga.
Finalists in the competitions are selected following semi-final
rounds, which were held in various international locations,
including Sydney, Tokyo, Moscow, London, and New York. Preliminary
rounds were held previously on at regional level.
" As a panel, we were to rank, in order, our choices
for first through fifth place,” Whatley said. “At
this level, even fifth place was an outstanding accomplishment,
since it was a world-wide competition.”
“In addition, each judge provided individual written
comments to each competitor, with the expectation that the
competitor would then be able to draw on the ‘combined
wisdom’ of the panel of judges that heard him/her play,
and further improve and refine his/her playing and artistry,”
he said.
In addition to the competitions, the conference included workshops
and seminars that covered a variety of pedagogical issues.
