Building. |
The College of Humanities and Social Sciences will celebrate
the groundbreaking of its new home, Academic Building V, on
June 8.
The ceremony, which is scheduled to include addresses by a
representative from the Texas State University System Board
of Regents, CHSS dean John de Castro and university president
Jim Gaertner, will be held at 9 a.m. at the construction site
east of Lee Drain Building and south of the Smith-Hutson Annex.
A reception will follow the ceremony at the site, and the
entire event is open to the public.
The tentatively-named Academic Building V will house several
departments and offices currently in need of additional space
due to the recent expansion of the university, according to
CHSS associate dean Terry M. Thibodeaux.
Relocating to ABV will be the departments of political science,
psychology, and sociology and the college dean’s suite,
as well as Accounts Payable, the Business Office, Human Resources,
Payroll and Purchasing. The Student Advising and Mentoring
Center, currently in need of additional space to meet the
increasing demand for their services, will also relocate into
larger quarters, Thibodeaux said.
A new teaching enhancement center will be housed on the concourse
floor, providing various services and programs for faculty
and staff of the entire university.
The building, designed by WHR Architects, Inc., and to be
constructed by SpawGlass Construction Corp., has a budget
of $30 million and will be approximately 150,000 square feet,
making it one of the largest buildings on campus, Thibodeaux
said.

Rec Sports Offers Water
Aerobics, Fitness Classes
The Recreational Sports Department will help students, faculty
and staff stay in shape over the summer with two new “innovative
classes” scheduled to begin June 4, as well as the continuation
of its group fitness program beginning Thursday (May 31).
Bikini Body Building, which will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays
from 5:10-6:10 p.m., is a water aerobics class held at the
Rec Sports Outdoor Pool.
Held as a pilot program during May, the class combines traditional
“land aerobics” with the buoyancy of the water
to give participants a harder workout that is easier on the
body, according to Mindy Oden, assistant director for wellness
programs for Rec Sports.
“It will be a combo of cardio moves in the water and
also using some pool weights, like water dumbbells, you’ll
use that to work the upper body, your core and even your lower
body,” she said.
“It’s a fantastic way to really work your body,”
Oden said. “Whether you have joint problems or not,
it’s a great complement to anything else you’re
doing because it’s minimal impact but it’s such
a neat resistance tool.”
Participants should bring a swimsuit and towel.
Rockin to the Core, a strength and conditioning class that
will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:10-4:10 p.m.,
will use the Rock Climbing Wall’s free-standing boulder,
stability balls and bands to work the upper body and core.
Though the class will use the boulder, climbing experience
is not needed because “you don’t go that far off
the ground,” Oden said.
Both innovative classes will be held through the second summer
sessions, with modified classes during the breaks and fall
classes anticipated, according to Oden.
In addition, the established group fitness classes, including
boot camp, hip hop, yoga and kick boxing, will be held at
various times and dates to accommodate schedules.
The HKC will be open on Memorial Day from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.,
with the heated pool open from noon to 6 p.m., and will begin
its normal summer schedule on Tuesday (May 29), which is from
6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.
All group fitness and innovative classes are free for SHSU
students, faculty, staff and those with Health and Kinesiology
Center passes.
For more information, call Oden at 936.294.1307 or visit the
Rec Sports Web site for the full fitness schedule
and HKC and pool hours.

Profs Recognized By Ag Organizations
Dwayne Pavelock, assistant professor of agricultural education,
was recently named the American Association for Agricultural
Education’s “Outstanding Young Member Award”
for the organization’s western region.
The award is given to an agricultural educator with less than
seven years in the field on the basis of teaching, service
and research, Pavelock said.
Each of the AAAE’s three regions gives out one award
in the category, and Pavelock was selected out of a region
that includes approximately 15 states and one territory-Guam,
he said.
“ I work with great people,” Pavelock said. “Any
of my success is just because they provided support and guidance
along the way.”
In addition, Pavelock and four other faculty members and graduate
assistants will be recognized for teaching in June by the
North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture.
On June 22, during the organization’s 2007 Annual NACTA
Conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign,
the NACTA Teacher Fellow Award will be presented to Pavelock
and Roger Hanagriff, associate professor of agribusiness;
and the NACTA Teacher Award of Merit will be presented to
Michael Lau, assistant professor of agricultural Business.
In addition, the NACTA Graduate Assistant Award of Merit will
be presented to Alisha Bullion, and the NACTA Outstanding
Graduate Assistant award will be presented to Reagan Machac.
Hanagriff was also named Rodeo Coach of the Year by the organization.
The five were selected based on the association’s criteria,
which included recommendations from peers or supervisors,
self-evaluations, as well as student evaluations and teaching
philosophies, Pavelock said.
