Conroe Mayor is Summer Commencement Speaker

Tommy Metcalf
Conroe Mayor Tommy Metcalf
Sam Houston State University and its August commencement speaker have a lot in common.

L. T. "Tommy" Metcalf is known by his first name, which is often the case with SHSU, known affectionately as plain old "Sam."

Metcalf is a Sam Houston State University graduate.

His son, Will, and sister Babette, are receiving degrees during one of the two ceremonies at which Metcalf will speak.

And like Sam Houston State University's motto-- "The measure of a Life is its Service"-- Conroe's mission statement is "To protect and serve the citizens of Conroe and exceed their expectations," and Metcalf promises to personally return all phone calls.

An estimated 850 students are candidates for degrees to be conferred at two ceremonies on Aug. 4 in Johnson Coliseum. The 10 a.m. ceremony is for the Colleges of Business Administration and Humanities and Social Sciences, and the 2 p.m. ceremony is for Arts and Sciences, Criminal Justice and Education.

Will Metcalf will graduate with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice and Babette Eikenberg will receive her doctorate in educational administration. Eikenberg is the executive director of human resources for the Montgomery Independent School District.

Metcalf is a graduate of Conroe High School and the Texas College of Mortuary Science.   He has been president of Metcalf Funeral Home in Conroe for more than 35 years.

He is a past president of the Conroe Rotary Club, the Montgomery County United Way, the Conroe High School Ex-Students Association, the Montgomery County Hospital District, and was a founding member and first board chairman of the Montgomery County Crime Stoppers organization.

He is also past president of the Embassy Club of the Greater Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce, former district chairman for the Sam Houston Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and founding board member of the Library Friends of Conroe.

He is a lifetime vice-president of the Montgomery County Fair Association, and former board member of the Conroe Chapter of the American Red Cross , Greater Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce, Montgomery County Emergency Assistance, and Lake Conroe Rotary Club.

He is also is a past president of the Texas Funeral Directors Association and represented Texas as the policy board representative with the National Funeral Directors Association.

He is a member of the Lake Conroe Rotary Club and he and his wife, Mary Ann, are members of the First Baptist Church, where he serves on the Greeter's Committee. He is a lifetime member of the Library Friends of Conroe and the Montgomery County Fair Association, and is serving on the boards of the Houston Galveston Area Council, the Greater Conroe Lake Conroe Area Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Conroe Economic Development Council .

Metcalf became mayor of Conroe in May 2004 and is serving a four-year term.

He and his wife of 35 years have three children--Will and daughters Emily Cook and Rachel Anderson. They also have three grandchildren.
